ctnurse Posted July 21, 2016 #1 Share Posted July 21, 2016 We are going to Pompeii and have a tour guide. Do we need to buy tickets ahead? Is there a special line for tour guides and their groups? I also read that buying online doesn't guarantee a special entrance, and you still need to stop at the ticket window. There is a 6 Euro service fee and a 2.50 charge to print at home. Should I buy ahead?
Rare cruisemom42 Posted July 21, 2016 #2 Share Posted July 21, 2016 In my opinion, you don't need to buy your tickets ahead of time, but I guess you may face a longer wait IF you are going in high season and IF you plan to roll in just as the gates are opening. If you have a private tour and a tour guide, you may want to ask about going to one of the secondary entrances (e.g., the one by the amphitheatre) which may have fewer people waiting in line. I was there in June with a group and we used that entrance rather than the main entrance -- very little to no wait.
Beanb41 Posted July 22, 2016 #3 Share Posted July 22, 2016 You need to check with your tour guide if they are supplying you tickets as part of the package. We were there in April on a ships excursion and our guide had tickets and we went almost straight through. The ship also organised a bus to and from Pompeii without any ticketing and the passengers took almost an hour to get their tickets. I have found with most Italian "monuments" queues for tickets are generally always long but prepurchasing through official ticket agencies cuts down waiting time considerably. Where security inspections are required one cannot circumvent those but there are no security checks at Pompeii
Vicky1126 Posted July 31, 2016 #4 Share Posted July 31, 2016 I was there in June. There are 2 lines, 1 is the so called express line where you pay 2 more euros to get a combo ticket that includes admission to an exhibition. There were only a few people on that express lane and for 2 euros, it can save you at least 30 minutes of waiting time.
