cidymom Posted July 28, 2016 #1 Share Posted July 28, 2016 We will be on our first NCL cruise next year on the Breakaway. My son has asthma so I would like to avoid the public smoking areas. Which other areas allow smoking besides the casino? I read there is smoking on the Waterfront area on Deck 8. If we are in a cabin on Deck 9 towards the aft, will we smell cigarette smoke from balcony from below? Which side do they allow smoking so we can avoid? Thanks in advance for your input. luvtheships Posted July 28, 2016 #2 Share Posted July 28, 2016 (edited) I don't recall which side they Allow smoking. I was actually considering booking a balcony if and when we ever sail the ba again so I looked at them on our last cruise but I dislike the ba sooo much I doubt this will happen and booking a balcony is not something I'm really interested in anyway IMHO while the ship is massive I did decide that I would only book the highest up balcony possible should I ever sail her again and if I wanted to pay for a minuscule balcony with is doubtful as I said. Lol I guess this is deck 11 or 12 as I thought deck 9 was too close for comfort near the waterfront Of course the smart thing to do is just book on the opposite side of the ship from the waterfront Just an FYI the deck 6/7/8 atrium area are very smoky and headliners doorway entrance and le bistro will have the smell. You will need to avoid that entire area regardless of what other posters here will tell you Many of The bar areas are near the outside smoking waterfront area as well and in that 6/7/8 area. They have a cute name for that 6/7/8 area but I don't remember it It is for this reason that I booked the gem over the ba for our next cruise as I won't expose my seriously asthmatic dh to the ba and it's terrible design and lack of sitting/relaxing space. I sailed the ba with my dd's and all we kept saying is dad can't go here dad can't go there and we tried very hard to find ways for him to avoid the smoke should he ever sail the ba and found it difficult. The gem is much easier to avoid smoke I also refuse to book balconies for many reasons First I don't trust my neighbors to obey the non smoking regs. Secondly I have read and heard about crew arbitrarily coming on to your deck during the day to varnish the wood railing I understand the need for this procedure but if you are not there to tell them no you can't do that or I will have an asthma attack then they will just go ahead and varnish it. Plus even if they skip your deck they can and will varnish the railings around you. The ba is so tight and close in that you can be sure what happens on the balconies around you will effect you Telling the steward or guest services to stay off your balcony would be like telling a brick wall They would say we dont know if they are varnishing your cabin or something like that And exactly what would an asthmatic do if the railings were varnished without your knowledge while you were out? Have an attack most likely It's not like they need or care about getting your consent Unfortunately they are always varnishing and your cabin could be at issue For those that think this is a joke or that the likelihood of your cabin being selected is remote...think again Edited July 28, 2016 by luvtheships
3poundpuppies Posted July 28, 2016 #3 Share Posted July 28, 2016 We had a starboard side balcony cabin towards the aft in the spring, and never had any smoke issues from below (different story though from the jerks a few cabins down who were smoking on their balcony). There is a roof over the waterfront to keep it protected, which i think redirected any smoke.

Just wondering what was the outcome after you reported the balcony smokers For some reason I'm guessing the steward never smelled the smoke or saw the butts. [emoji41] I wonder how the culprits disposed of them? Fling them over the side perhaps? Putting them out in a cup and taking them out of the cabin to dispose of properly seems like a stretch for this type of pax. Especially since there are few garbage pails on a ship as the crew cleans up messes I really hope they weren't stupid enough to flush them. I can't image the problems that might cause It's very sad to hear pax are still smoking on balconies but it would be worse to find out it wasn't stopped by Ncl after reported Op? CasinoCruzGirl Posted July 28, 2016 #8 Share Posted July 28, 2016 Smoking on waterfront on deck 8 is by Maltings and Fatcats. I like cabin 8780 balconÿ cabin which is on the same side as smoking area it is the first cabin nearby for easy access. Make sure to book on opposite side of maltings. cidymom Posted July 28, 2016 Author #9 Share Posted July 28, 2016 Thank you to everyone for your helpful input. To be on the safe side, I moved from the starboard side to the port side. Hopefully we will have considerate neighbours who follow the rules! Thanks all.

Well, not sure my DH (or MIL) would've appreciated it if I reported his sister  There was a cabin in between the two of ours, and the lady in there bitched at her, so that pretty much ended things quickly. Soda can was the preferred disposal method. She lied and said she asked the steward for an ashtray and he gave her one.
