luv2cruise99 Posted October 27, 2005 #26 Share Posted October 27, 2005 I don't often dine in the main dining room, especially on formal nights, so I can't answer how many people do or do not dress formally, however I was surprised to notice on my last two Princess cruises how crowded the buffet was on both formal nights. It seemed like alot of people were opting for alternative dining rather than dressing up.
Pam in CA Posted October 27, 2005 #27 Share Posted October 27, 2005 I was surprised to notice on my last two Princess cruises how crowded the buffet was on both formal nights. It seemed like alot of people were opting for alternative dining rather than dressing up.That is a trend but I find it sad that people don't want to dress up. There's something special about everyone looking so beautiful / handsome, a certain pride about who you are and how you look when you're dressed up. Call me an old fogey but I think that when people dress up, they behave better and are more gracious, more relaxed and ready to savor the moment. Dinner takes longer on Formal nights because people seem to be more engaged with each other.
yancycruiser Posted October 28, 2005 #28 Share Posted October 28, 2005 I agree with the 98% figure. In fact, we rarely notice those that aren't dressed for the occasion. We prefer dressing up. Also, we have no problem with those who choose not to dress up - that is why they have several good alternatives.
JLC@SD Posted October 28, 2005 #29 Share Posted October 28, 2005 you have the option of the buffet' date=' and they serve the same dinner as the dining roomsasha'smom[/quote'] Does anyone know or have experience, does that include the lobster?
sunprincess Posted October 28, 2005 #30 Share Posted October 28, 2005 I enjoy formal nights & getting dressed up ;) I think most that go to the main dining rooms do get dressed up for dinner. Some more formal than others. Those not wishing to dress formally can use the alternative dining choices or Horizon Court. My vote : Keep Formal nights Formal
Seal Posted October 28, 2005 #31 Share Posted October 28, 2005 Hi Princess does rent tuxes--on the Coral Princess they have a tux shop--I think that is unusual and the first time I've seen one. If you have been sent a book to answer your questions about your cruise, the info will be in there and you order from that--they have both men and womens formal wear--I think you can find the same info on the princess site--I think they only do 7 day cruises--not positive You'll be able to find--I see it--I just don't remember where The Other Nancy:)
honeymoon4ever Posted October 28, 2005 #32 Share Posted October 28, 2005 The web site says that you should pre-order them online or over the phone and they will deliver the tux to you the first day. They recommend trying it on first thing as their is a seamstress on board for minor alterations. It also says that they have a LIMITED number of tuxes on board for exchanges and for rent, but it is first come first served, so don't wait until the night of the first formal night to try to rent them. Guest AdiosReality Posted October 28, 2005 #33 Share Posted October 28, 2005 We hate formal nights, hate hate hate! Its dumb, you get all dressy out of your comfortable clothes, to get into uncomfortable ones, then you eat for about an hour, then go back into your room to get comfy again, rediculas! I'm on vacation! We no longer eat in the dining room, maybe once on a 10 day cruise, we can't stand it in there, too stuffy. Its fun to do it, when your not on vacation, I live in Napa CA. and thats all we have here, are 5 star restaraunts, and wines and wineries blah blah blah, we go on vacation to get away from it all, its nicer that way. But for those who do not get to do it very often, it can be fun, its like being a kid and playing dress up, the first cruise it was fun, oh yeah, and I was like 50 pounds thinner, but hey! I'm on vacation!

Pam a lot of us don't consider that an "old fogey" attitude at all and agree with you 100%. Isn't it nice that Princess has the 24 hour buffet for those who chose not to dress? JLC@SD - the menu at the buffet is similar to that in the dining room but not EXACTLY the same. Since we always do the dining room (yep we get dressed up) can't say for certain if the buffet has the lobster, but I kind of doubt it.
TEXASMUNK Posted October 28, 2005 #35 Share Posted October 28, 2005 So often this topic deteriorates into "my rights" "my cruise" "etc, etc, etc. I love the ambiance of formal nights, there is nothing, repeat, nothing, more enjoyable that spending an evening with my wife....she looks like a billions bucks in her gold cocktail dress, or her black slinky dress... And I appreciate those that choose to not dress and dine in the Buffet. We had an ugly experience with a drunk on the Norway that choose to come to dinner in his cut-off tee shirt that said F*** *** across the front, cut-offs, body odor and foul mouth. Every time I read someone going on a rant about how they do what they want and ignore any "recommended" dress code, I flash back this this guy..who, security escorted OUT of the dining room. dan40 Posted October 28, 2005 #37 Share Posted October 28, 2005 AdiosReality, If you don't like putting on the "uncomfortable" clothes, get some formal clothes that fit. Not putting you down but so many folks get dressed 2 the 9's so seldom that those clothes rarely fit well. Either they've shrunk or we've.........., or we order according to a size that "used to be", but is no longer. My tux was properly fitted and is of tropical weight and is as comfortable as my shorts 'n' pullover. Another year of "age expansion" might change that, sad to say. Went cruising with another couple and he rented a tux without up to date measurements. Then did not try fit before formal nite. His discomfort was obvious. gunnywife Posted October 28, 2005 #38 Share Posted October 28, 2005 My husband I both like the formal nights. As a matter of fact we dress up each night on the cruise. We're casual enough when we're home. On our recent cruise on the Sun Princess the dining room was very crowded and I would say 98% of the people were dressed up.
