Dauntless Posted August 24, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 24, 2016 We soon will be boarding Viking Star for our first cruise. I see that 'al fresco' dining has been featured in some video reviews but I'm wondering if anyone has experienced it. We're doing the Viking Homelands cruise leaving Sept. 4. Anybody recently have first hand knowledge? Restaurant, World Cafe, you tell me.
CharTrav Posted August 24, 2016 #2 Share Posted August 24, 2016 World Cafe is the only place to do al fresco AFAIK. It's the deck area just outside the cafe and around the infinity pool. Very weather dependent. If it's raining, the doors to the outside are closed (not locked), tables are not prepared, and the staff doesn't serve out there. If it's just chilly, I think (memory fuzzy even tho a little over 2 wks ago) I think they may have heaters to warm the surrounding air. But if it's breezy or the ship is underway, making its own breeze, it may be pointless to even try to heat the air. I know I ate outside for breakfast and dinner once or twice. It was nice. Rare Peregrina651 Posted August 24, 2016 #3 Share Posted August 24, 2016 The deck plan does show outside seating for The Restaurant and I have a vague recollection of walking past the tables while walking laps on the promenade but on our Midnight sun cruise in June, I cannot say if it was ever used. As CharTrav suggests, it may have been a question of weather.
Rare Vineyard View Posted August 24, 2016 #4 Share Posted August 24, 2016 There are big glass doors inside the World Cafe that they slide open as well in really nice weather. I am not sure if that only happens while docked - but when we boarded in Barcelona they were open and it was really nice. We ate a few times out on the back deck when the weather was nice. Very enjoyable.
