Okay I am having rotator cuff repair on 9/6 and will be out of work for a little bit. Follow up appointment is 9/21. So I decided what is a better way to recoup with a little get away.

Just booked a cruise for 5 days on the Majesty of the Sea.. think this will make me feel better and the price was really nice too..

It's great remedy.

Looks like you've made up your mind to go ! As another woman may I share some advice please ? Button up tops will be your friend , anything going over your head needs a lot of stretch as your surgery arm needs to not move . Teach your "caddie " to help fix your hair unless you do well 1 handed . As another person said , if it's your dominant arm , strengthen & start practicing doing personal care 1 handed . Wishing you best of results on your surgery & healing relaxing cruise !

Ive had that surgery.....excellent way to recover!

Ive had people who worked for me milk it for weeks or months, but after a few days, the pain will subside. You wont have range of motion for a while, but nothing you cant handle on a cruise.

Again thanks for the well wishes....

I actually booked the cruise after I knew that I needed the surgery.

But it was a good deal.. will be waited on

Can still sit in the hot tub (sort of) but mostly relax and let people wait on me.

Don't plan on doing any formal nights..:D

Plus being a diamond plus I will get my "medicine" to help ease the pain.

Oh and I am not telling my dr. he don't tell me when he is going on vacation..:p

Will do a review while on the ship.. it is my right shoulder and yes right handed.

  • 3 weeks later...

An update on this....

had the surgery..yup very painful. Thank goodness for drugs but don't know how addicts like that type of high..

back to cruising, got to the parking lot, drop the car off and jumped on the shuttle.

Got to the pier and on the ship quickly..small ship but that's fine.

Up to the Windjammer for lunch was given a nice table quickly and assisted to the buffet..

Met the room steward gave her $$$ and ask for 4x pillows and ice 2x day for ice pack

.

OFF to the muster drill...now I didn't mind being disabled. Got a place by the door and before it was completed we were excused to leave,

Ate all but one meal in the Windjammer staff were great. Always coming to me to see if I needed anything. And many thank you's to the guest who asked me if I needed help

At CocoCay we stayed on the ship...nice and quiet. I was sitting in the hot tub just relaxing my legs when this very very fluffy lady came in with her hubby...she is looking at me very weird.

Then she asked me 'can I ask you something?' how do you bath like that??

WTH so with a grin I tell her I go to the 1 ft 6 in pool and my husband rubs me down with soap...then I come to this hot tub to rinse off!!!!:D

she was in shock,,,then I ask her how do you bath here..lol

(bathrooms are tiny...and she was fluffy...me tiny) her husband smiles at me looks at her and laughs.

Ok we did get off in Nassaua and just walked up to the chocolate factory and bought a box of mix chocolates

walked the water side and got a few trinkets from the locals handmade stuff

Back on the ship to rest...

The shows were great..

Sleeping was horrible...omg couldn't get comfortable

Casino was nice too.. saw money in a machine next to me. Nobody showed up for at least 30 min yes I cashed it out..81.16

Getting off the ship was a nightmare ..people pushing and shoving..asking us to move..ok moo-moo

Was we got into customs we were escorted to handicap (hey this sling is nice,,) and put to the front of a special line.

Well back to the Dr for my first follow up... Wednesday..yes two week follow up to remove the huge dressing on the shoulder

Did end up having the bones shaved too....would I cruise again after surgery yes..

When are you planning to go.... I would allow two months before you go.

My husband tore his rotator cuff and had his shoulder immobilized for two months. He had to sleep in a recliner... could not move his shoulder at all... could not shower... I used baby wipes to clean under his arm. Now he had a bad tear... so I would check with your doctor.

FYI back in summer of '14 my husband fell over something in the back yard tore his quad muscle. We did not realize how bad it was.... he fell again a month later and tore his rotator cuff. He had surgery 1 on his quad muscle in Jan '15.... in April we took a 5 day cruise out of Tampa knowing that in May he was having his shoulder done..... well doctor said he needed to do more work on the knee... so in December '15 we planned on his third surgery of the year... and so in October we took a cruise on Oasis, knowing that we was going to be laid up. Infact he was in a cast up to his ass for two months... and we scheduled our next cruise for Sept 16... He is still recovering

I can not stress enough that if you know the tear is bad... allow at least 2 months before your cruise... or take plenty of friends along to help. It is possible that you will not need to be as immoble as he had to be... as I recall he had two or three tears.

I hope all goes well for you with surgery and your planned cruise

I missed your update. Glad it worked out for you. My husband's case was such that I had to purchase cheap shirts and cut them to be able to dress him while keeping the shoulder in the sling. Later, when we went back to the doctor I ran into someone who also had surgery and they did not have to be as strict about keeping it in the sling.

His shoulder is now great... wished his knee was doing better.

I am glad it worked out well for you, I think the cruise or an all inclusive is a great idea.

I tore my rotator cuff falling down stairs ( well the dog did push me) and I have been putting it off for a while, first I did PT then got really busy when it did not work out well enough it is a really small tear but still painful at times. Now I have crappy insurance ( from a very large employer) and cannot afford it. Another year or so and I should be OK.

So here is my question since there are so many people that replied to the thread and excuse me for asking but: "How do you wipe"? I have tried using my other hand and I know I am not that flexible (bad back and car accident) but for the most part it just does not work out. Is it me or is it somewhat common? I figure I will work on it leading up to the surgery.

I just had the shoulder surgery 8-11, rotator cuff, bone spur, arthritis & labrum repairs. I wouldn't want to cruise until I was able to use my arm better. It would be hard moving the luggage around plus if the ship hits some seas, you only have 1 arm to balance yourself. Not to mention the people who only care about themselves with no regard for your wounded wing. You may need ice to cool down your shoulder and or pain meds, it could also interfere with your therapy. Each person is different, mine has been pain free, plus with great range of motion but it is a pain having your arm in a sling especially if it is your dominate hand. Going to the windjammer would not be easy with only one arm. I am cruising 10 weeks after surgery & I am hoping that I don't have issues then. Good luck with the operation.

oh my god .. what a Debbie Downer you are! You must be a riot at parties !

DH broke his elbow about 7 weeks before our cruise. We got the O.K. from the doctor, then I shipped our luggage to/from our pre & post-cruise hotel, and got porters to do all the lifting. We left our formal wear at home, and since we had a GS, we did dinner in the cabin on formal night.

We've had some really rough seas the first night out of port before. On a recent cruise, a lady must have fallen, because she had a huge nasty bruise from forehead down to her jaws.

It's true about cruise ships. Once you're finished w/ embarking they really pamper. We both were sick for a week on a recent cruise, and no worries about cooking. We just went upstairs for that. We had the steward to clean our cabins. We even got some extra meds from their infirmary.

If you have insurance, you can get a note from the doctor and file a claim. We did that once when DH broke his hip.

I knew you could do it. Good going.

Had spine and L hip replacement surgery last year and still cruised. Nice going thru handicap line and out the door.

Happy healing.

I'm glad it worked out! I had rotator cuff (shaved some bone spurs, as well) before and I know sleeping is difficult. But I'd rather have a hard time sleeping on a cruise than at home. At least on a cruise I am waited on hand and foot!

Too bad about debarkation issues, but people should be aware of injured, handicapped, etc. What, their life is more important and want to save all for 10 minutes by jostling you out of the way??

Anyhow, a cruise, even on the smaller Majesty, is better than not!

You either get a PT to help you " train " the other arm to do it , go " thru " from the front ( I recommend flushable wet wipes ) , ask your significant other for help , or perhaps get

a bidet . Not an easy task , been there

Sorry to hear about your RC. Anyway, I wish you a speedy recovery.

My brother had his repaired a few years back, he bounced back in no time.

The cruise will be a great way to recoup.
