ckck Posted August 27, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 27, 2016 Came across the article "This Natural Phenomenon In Alaska Happens Just Once A Year And It’s Spectacular" today about the colors of September in Alaska. I am hoping on our Sept 10 sail followed by the land tour we see some of the colorful tundra in the Denali area. Have any of you experienced cruisers encountered this? PNW Traveler Posted August 27, 2016 #2 Share Posted August 27, 2016 Came across the article "This Natural Phenomenon In Alaska Happens Just Once A Year And It’s Spectacular" today about the colors of September in Alaska. I am hoping on our Sept 10 sail followed by the land tour we see some of the colorful tundra in the Denali area. Have any of you experienced cruisers encountered this? We've seen the September fall colors in Denali, but rather far into the park. The depth of hue is dependent on hours of daylight and nighttime temperatures, so is weather dependent. It is amazing to see wildlife amid the fall color. FWIW, we also have alpine fall colors here in Washington State.
Rare Gardyloo Posted August 27, 2016 #3 Share Posted August 27, 2016 Closer to Anchorage, here's Mirror Lake in the fall (two different years). Mirror Lake is an easy stop if you're visiting the cool Native cemetery in Eklutna.
eandj Posted August 27, 2016 #4 Share Posted August 27, 2016 We actually saw some color changes while in the park two weeks ago. Earlier than normal per our guide.

mapleleaves Posted August 28, 2016 #6 Share Posted August 28, 2016 The latest date of my Denali visit was around Aug 25. The fall colors were just beginning. We even experienced a little snow as we drove thru Polychrome Pass. Great moose sightings since it was rutting season. You might want to look at Susan Stevenson's blog for the past several Septembers to get an idea of how different it is year to year. She's a photographer and blogger from the Fairbanks area ( North Pole). She usually drives thru Denali during the Lottery when the park road is open to private vehicles, which is the first few days after the bus trips end, so around 9/16. Sept 2015 was VERY snowy! If you look at that particular entry she posts a comparison shot of 2014 and 2015. http://susanstevenson.com/blog/2015/09/denali-road-lottery-2015-a-snowy-event/#more-1461 p.s. her aurora shots are amazing. They start in late Sept/Oct.

mapleleaves Posted August 28, 2016 #8 Share Posted August 28, 2016 Thank you! you're welcome. My favorites are in March when she photographs the Ice Sculpting Championship, and the aurora is active at that time also. http://susanstevenson.com/blog/2015/03/ice-art-and-happy-dogs/#more-1280
