Channelside has been struggling for years IME

my last few visits were VERY disappointing

where are you staying?

YBOR city is always an option and reachable by the trolley

and there is COLUMBIA ... always popular

and Tampa Riverwalk is what Channelside hoped to become

HOWEVER .... ANYTIME I get to Tampa my first choice dinner destination is

BERNS

http://www.bernssteakhouse.com/

regularly rated one of the top 10 steak places in the US

more than dinner, an evening of entertainment

ask to tour the kitchen ......

ask to tour the wine cellar ..... (which holds a FRACTION of their collection)

make ressies for the dessert room ..... a separate dining room .... just for dessert.

Now that people are saying Channelside Bay Plaza is not that good, I would love recommendations near the hotel we will be staying at. We will be at the Embassy Suites Tampa Convention Center.

Seriously, take a cab to Ybor City. It is amazing! It is very close. Less than two miles.

Came in just to say that. Columbia restaurant is amazing. I think there's one I still haven't been to but I've never had anything less than excellence at a Columbia restaurant. My favorite is the Boliche.

Also like the Berns suggestion up there but bring an extra paycheck lol. Expensive but one of the best steaks in the country and the dessert floor - yes, "floor" - is awesome.

The trolley's are cheap but if OP would rather, Uber is quick and cheap as well.

note

there are two locations for Columbia in Tampa

the original restaurant is in Ybor as we've mentioned

in the Riverside area downtown is a smaller version "Columbia Café" with a smaller menu, but all the classics are still here. They do lunch and dinner ... and a short walk from the Mar' Waterside or Emb' Suites ....

Would Columbia be a good choice if a few people in my group are not adventures eaters?

see menu at http://www.columbiarestaurant.com/

but don't forget about BERN's esp for 'non adventurous eaters' despite the $$ warning .... it is steak and taters!

You CAN spend $$$ at Bern's, they have arguably the largest wine list in the world, and the desserts are SO tempting as are the appetizers ... they have after dinner drinks by the shot that cost 4 digits ..... (I once overheard an overstuffed shirt try to impress his group by telling the sommelier to bring him the most expensive wine they had. The sommelier replied he'd be happy to but was not sure the $20,000 a bottle selection would go well with his meal ......)

BUT you can also get a world class steak for $35 and this includes soup, salad, potato, onion rings and vegie ... they encourage sharing and recommend buying one large steak for a group and sharing the meat (everyone gets their own soup and salad etc) .... and a great bottle of wine can be had for a very reasonable price ... just tell them what you would like to spend .... I've gotten great choices by the "s" for under $50 .....

A GREAT meal at Columbia or Bern's will cost about the same ... but if you want to go BIG BIG TIME, Bern's has the options ..... http://www.bernssteakhouse.com/

Columbia has the Cuban flavor and color and at the main rest' they once had Flamingo dancers on the tables at night but dunno if they still do that.
