sunscreen/bug spray

Combo products have shown to be less effective, so if you do use one then you may want to apply more frequently than usual. We use repel wipes and Neutrogena sunscreen stick ( 50 or 70).These 2 items are especially nice if you are flying ( no liquids).

We put the repellant on top of the screen. There are conflicting opinions amongst professionals which should go on first. It just makes more sense to me that the deet be less absorbed than the sunscreen.

Bullfrog but most of your "combo" sprays are gonna be DEET free and much less effective than using a sunscreen and bug spray separately.

We applied sunscreen and gave it a few minutes to dry and then applied REPEL bug spray with DEET. It worked great.

Looking for recommendations for a good sunscreen/bug spray combo. Would prefer spf 30 sunscreen.

Thanks!

Big research topic of ours. Here are my notes:

From the CDC: "Repellents that are applied according to label instructions may be used with sunscreen with no reduction in repellent activity; however, limited data show a one-third decrease in the sun protection factor (SPF) of sunscreens when DEET-containing insect repellents are used after a sunscreen is applied. Products that combine sunscreen and repellent are not recommended, because sunscreen may need to be reapplied more often and in larger amounts than needed for the repellent component to provide protection from biting insects. In general, the recommendation is to use separate products, applying sunscreen first and then applying the repellent. Due to the decrease in SPF when using a DEET-containing insect repellent after applying sunscreen, travelers may need to reapply the sunscreen more frequently."

We always consult EWG when making product purchase decisions. See EWG's 10th Annual Guide to Sunscreens & EWG's Guide to Bug Repellents in the Age of Zika.

For our cruise next week we are taking Coppertone Sport SPF 30 & Sawyer Picaridin Spray.
