Transportation from Port in Venice to Gondola Rides

We will be in Venice In November, we wanted to check in to our stateroom then go for an evening gondola ride, seems like it is somewhat of a challenge to get from the ship to the area where they are. I was told it could take an hour to get from point A to point B with Oceanias shuttle to the people mover than a walk to the area, can anyone confirm this and/or offer your thoughts on how easy or difficult this process is.

thanks,

Wendy

Hi

it's true that the place where you port is some way from the centre of Venice.

First thing to do is look at the berth that you've been allocated. Then check out water taxis . The thing to do is walk (there'll be many of you) to the office and buy a ticket hop on the water bus/taxi ,both easy to use.And get off in the centre of Venice. You will find gondolas there or you may have to go to the centre where you will find plenty.

Gondolas are VERY expensive and not as romantic as you may think!

Wander round the city, get lost, find your way again. Keep your hand on your hand bag!

Have fun, wish I was coming with you!

Josie

BTW don't miss the sail into/out of Venice ,one of the most memorable experiences ever.

A water taxi is very expensive.

I suggest you take a vaporetta, (water bus) from the port area to wherever you wish. There are 2 stops very close to the port. Be it to Piazza San Marco, Rialto, or Statione Stanta Maria to take your Gondola ride. The advantage of the water bus is that you can take it all the way around the Grand Canal and get a pretty good perspetive of Venice. It is a bus though and there are very few seats.

Or, there is also a "people mover" from the port to Pizzale Roma where you again, can catch a vaporetta or even a Gondola.

There is also the Alilaguna, sort of in between a water taxi and water bus.

Gondola rides are about 80 euros for 40 minutes. In November it can be quite cold and wet.

Oceania ships are usually docked just a block or two from the People Mover.

We discovered that there was no point apart from wasting time, money and effort on using the People Mover - this was just a monorail that takes you just one stop, which is a block or so away to Piazzale Roma. You would have to climb up to the station and then wait for the train to come. When you ride the other top, you would have to climb down. You can actually walk from your ship to the Piazzale Roma as it is only two blocks or so away (try walk on the pavement and watch the traffic!)

From Piazzale Roma, you just take one of the water taxis to say, Piazza San Marco, and you can try your gondola ride. Both Piazzale Roma and the Piazza San Marco is on the Grand Canal.

Please check what time your ship leaves in the evening. You would not wish to miss the ship! It would be better if your ship docks overnight in Venice, and you go on your gondola ride on the first evening.

TIP: If your ship is leaving Venice in the evening, it would be advisable to reserve a stateroom (pref. with a balcony) on the Port Side, because, when the ship leaves, you will find it passes Piazza San Marco on the left of the ship. It also passes other lovely sights of Venice-by-night. The scene can be quite "stunning" - that might even give your night-time Gondola ride a run for its money! If you can't get a cabin on the Port side, just go onto the top decks and enjoy the view.

It's much easier to get on the water bus that runs from the port area to San Marco than doing all this walking. Save the walking for once you're in the city.

When we were there the route was taken exclusively by Aliguna though, so a vaporetto pass did not work for this. They were using the berths for the municipal vaporettos. You get on this right close to where the ship is docked. Look for this area;

The best way is to get the water bus which takes you to St Marks Square. However you might want to take boots as Venice is prone to flood in November and December. You will notice raised platforms for walking in St Marks Square which are there so that people can get across in times of flooding.
