Wondering what happens with Port Canaveral being Closed

Well we are currently on our way from southeast Georgia to Port Canaveral. Right now we are about 20 miles south of St. Augustine and traffic has not been bad at all. Very little debris in roads although there is evidence of many trees down. Weather is beautiful. If all keeps going well we should be on the Victory by lunch!

I respect your opinion but you shouldn't have to purchase travel insurance to ensure you get to your vacation. BTW, just because I don't purchase travel insurance doesn't mean I am not a responsible person. My wife and I, like many people, have worked extremely hard to put us in the great situation we are presently in. Just for example, our daughter will graduate debt free this spring from an accredited four year university, that's an example of personal responsibility. Compassion... It slowly disappears every day in this world as to many people think about themselves vs the big picture....

There is a product as you know specifically designed for this situation, and the onus is on the passenger to buy - or not to buy. Carnival is not the "insurer" and has not built the cost of that "insurance" into its cruise fare. Were Carnival to go into the business of taking care of passengers in a situation like this, then cruise fares would be higher to reflect that additional assumption of risk.

That would fall under a person not being responsible... I am choosing to spend my money with xxx on vacation, I shouldn't need insurance.. In unforeseen circumstances the parties should be able to work out within reason... Carnival doesn't show any compassion within these circumstances unless it is there fault or they can't comply on there end, meaning getting to port on time or missing port. They don't consider the issues others may be dealing with.

How is your apartment being hit by lightning (weather) and burning down, ruining your stuff, and it being irresponsible to expect your landlord or realty company or anyone else to provide funds to replace those items that you could have insured any more "irresponsible" than not getting trip insurance to cover for things like hurricanes (weather) keeping you from cruising and a financial loss there...

It is analogous.

First of all, I think Carnival DOES often show compassion and has compensated cruisers left and right in several of these situations. I bet they have made side deals with other people as well for specific situations caused by the hurricane. They have likely done MORE than was fair if looked at overall.

But if they haven't shown compassion to everyone who couldn't be bothered to buy travel insurance, especially those so cavalier as to say they NEVER bother with travel/trip insurance because it's a waste of money, I don't see that as a problem. It just encourages bad behavior, frankly. Perhaps they should force you to buy trip insurance by law, like you're forced to have home insurance with a mortgage if this is people's attitude...

Carnival has offered full refunds to any cruise where they could not deliver the product as expected (shortened cruises, cruises with the whole itinerary changed, etc). They have also offered the option of continuing on the vacation, with OBC, refunds, and future discounts. I think they've offered a hell of a lot, frankly.

I will say I am very blessed to still be alive.. yes we had damage to our house, yard and etc.. that it what insurance it for.

We did most of the work ourselves too .. our elderly neighbor lady isn't home we cleaned up her yard too.

With all these negative people who chose not to have insurance during a hurricane that could of been 10x worse shame on you..

there is lots of damage here and some have insurance and the ones that don't shame on them (renters)

We cruise all the time.. and will carry insurance for emergency.

Even met a nun on a cruise and broke her arm.. she was escorted off the ship with her cousin.. thankfully he had insurance would of cost them over $7500 between flights, medical and etc.. she was on a ship excursion too ... should the ship be held liable.

Those who were blessed to go on the cruise.. have fun

And folks like me who care... glad that all my CC friends made it through.

Everything will work out for us.. we are alive..

and like me so sure there is a cruise in the future

I am going on the Pride in Jan.. anyone else.

rjrice1, glad that it sounds like your damage was minimal. We had none other than clean up. Like you, we helped our neighbors, brought in a lot of patio furniture even from neighbors who weren't home. Put stuff in any garage that had room--one neighbor currently out of the country had stuff from several people's patios stored in their garage. (They are aware of it and gave blessings).

To stay at least a little on topic, the people next door paid cash for their home. They have insurance, because that is responsible people do--even though no mortgage company requires it.

For all you telling me how WRONG i was or how CHEAP i was for not purchasing insurance, Insurance wasn't so easy with the hurricane. My best friends have to submit alot of proof and they are STILL taking a loss even with insurance. A big loss!!

WITHOUT MY INSURANCE:

I got a future cruise credit of $2548.00 and i got a $1300.00 cash refund, effective today. Yes, Carnival did me right...even without insurance!! I will be cruisin in April or May for what i have already spent!!! ;):p:D:)

How are they taking a BIG loss.

As far as your refund, this will be one of my questions at the stockholder meeting which I do attend. Thanks for putting it out there so I have written proof. You were on the 9th floor of the Magic on the 8th.

What are you going to do thank management for helping the long term health of the company? A refund or a transfer to another cruise is the absolute right thing for carnival to do. Other cruise lines do it (and did for this storm). Airlines routinely allow passengers to cancel and change flights free of charge due to large weather systems. Hotels allow refunds of prepaid rooms as well.

Those refund policies are designed to smooth earnings and are primarily in place to assure that travelers don't have buyers remorse when it is to late to resell the cabin. They are not in place to be punitive. It costs a lot of money to capture a client and small refunds buy goodwill and hopefully will result in a future sailing. The same future sailing where they will generate 25% of their revenue from onboard spending with higher margins. I would rather see them offer refunds to a casual traveler who has the potential to take multiple cruises than book revenue for an empty cabin.

Awww your so cute with your "shareholders" meeting stuff .....and yes that is where i was suppose to be on the 9th floor, do what you want to lady.:D And since carnival gave them the option of filing on the insurance and receiving a portion of their cruise...or a full cruise credit they have now chose the cruise credit. SO we are all good, much thanks for your concern;). OH and here let me help you out they were on the 9th floor to. :p

What will be one of your questions?

"I read on a blog, that San4Jon, got a refund on his cruise because of Hurricane Matthew. Why did Carnival make an exception to its refund policy when passengers couldn't cruise because of a hurricane?"

Why did they break policy that was established a few years back. There was an incident that involved one of Carnival corps companies. Cunard to be exact. It involved a law suit over a couple not purchasing insurance.

I understand the company giving a goodwill cruise credit as a result of the storm, but the cash refund is against things unless it was a return of port charges, government taxes and fee's, and other associated fee's that were unused such as shore excursions. Its also possible they had cruise air. A few unanswered questions I guess.

I go because our employee retirement portfolio has many shares of its stock.

First of ALL i got a cruise credit for what i spent on the cruise portion which was $2548.00, I got a CASH REFUND for what i had spent in the funshops which was $1300.00 i guess your funshops cant charge me for stuff i never USED ..your gonna look very stupid if you go arguing because i got a cash refund for what i had spent in cheers cards and their Liquor store lady..but it seems like its your thing to do. I was not the only one that got a cruise credit for this if you search this site and facebook we were all given cruise credits, after all carnival cant expect everyone to travel through 3 states of emergency for a cruise.... the cash refund were only for funshop purchases, excursions (which i had not bought), and port fees...Oh and the insurance form yeah i saw it hurricanes were not listed as covered;) Just medical:D and it was not 100% covered even if it was medical;)

I'm sure you have seen that San4Jon has explained his credits, based on your post. But I appreciate your reply, and get your question as it was stated. It would certainly have been fair to ask about a cash refund given your understanding of the situation.
