Can you drop your luggage at the ship with a rental car in civitavecchia?

Hi, we have been driving in Italy for the past week and will drop our car in Civitavecchia, we are wondering if we can drive to ship to drop our luggage? Hoping it may be possible. Thanks!

Yes, you should be able to drive up to the baggage drop area and then return your car.

Actually, NO! Civitavecchia is a "closed port" which means that you cannot drive into the port in a rental car. This is much different from some other ports (like Livorno or Barcelona) where one could drive to the pier. We have been in situations in Civitavecchia when we had to drop a rental car and then drag our luggage onto the free Port Shuttle buses. Another option is to drop your rental car and ask the agency to call you a taxi (that is permitted into the port). But taxis hate these short hauls and may want to overcharge you (20- 25€). We once asked a local rental car agency (might have been Europcar) if they would just give us a ride to the pier (we were willing to tip generously) and they explained that even they were not permitted to drive to the pier.

Spot on!!! We had the same experience with trying to drop off luggage and then park an absolute no go.

I thought that was the case but it's been a few years, Hoping europcar is near the new shuttle bus station from my maps! Sure appreciate all the knowledge on here!

I was under the impression that you can go in with a rental car as you can with your own car when you intend to park it there for the duration of the cruise. Usually it should be enough to show your cruise papers.

 

Europcar is right opposite the shuttle bus stop at Largo della Pace (the address according to google maps is Via Tarquinia, 19, 00053 Civitavecchia). On google maps the shuttle bus stop is still used as a big parking lot.

Just drop your passengers and luggage off at the port shuttle depot, return the rental, and walk back to the depot. I used Hertz, a bit further than Europcar, but better vehicles and service.
