Transatlantic vs. Transpacific: Any differences?

Recommended Posts

Having taken my first TA, and currently booked for a TP, can those who have done both chime in about what is likely to be different between the two experiences? Mind you, we reportedly had an unusually smooth crossing for our TA, so it's not necessarily going to be representative.

We have done two TA cruises. One was 14 days the other 12. We are booked on RCI's Explorer of the Seas TP from Sydney to Seattle for April 2018. That cruise is 23 days and stops in Hawaii.

That is a lot of sea days, but I think that I can handle it.

That's the one I'm taking as well. I'm really looking forward to it.

We've done both.

TA Southampton to FLL. 14 days, so a shorter crossing. Stopped in Le Havre, Cherbourg, Vigo and Maderia then 7 days to FLL. Entertainment staff had laid on lots to do for the sea days. Smooth seas.

TP Sydney - LA 29 days. Its a bigger ocean, so its a longer crossing. Started off more or less a sea day then a port, sea day then a port etc. About 5 stops around New Zealand, then lots of islands (Pago Pago, Bora Bora etc). After Tahiti it was then 4 days to Hawaii. Had 2 days there then 4 days to LA, so the last half was much more at sea than the first half (if you see what I mean).

Apart from the length of the cruises, they were fairly similar. Only real complaint on the TP was that Hawaio was the first US port. Hadn't dawned on us that we would have to do US immigration (on the ship). All the US and Canadian pax flashed there passports to the officials at one end of the ship, whilst the rest of us queued for 3 hours to show our passports to 2 officials in the casino. Totally mucked up our planned day in Honolulu. Arrived at 8, got off the ship at 12!
