Advice on Christmas Markets

Cruisecritic has a nice article on Christmas market cruises: http://www.cruisecritic.com/articles.cfm?ID=2050

I do not fully agree with the opening days of Christmas markets, though. Open after Christmas is the exception, not the norm and applies to only the the biggest - and not all of them - markets. They are always closed on Christmas Day.

If you cannot make it to a market, either because you sail just before or just after the Christmas market season - or even during another time of the year - and would still like to get some Christmas ornaments you could check if a Käthe Wohlfahrt shop is near or in your port stop. They are: Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Berlin, Heidelberg, Rüdesheim, Bamberg, Nürnberg, Oberammergau, Riquewihr, Bruges, plus further afield (or closer to you if you happen to live around there) at Stillwater USA (!) and York England (!). This is a high quality chain with very good stuff. There are other small independent shops scattered throughout Germany that offer Christmas goods off-season. In addition to that you can get the real quality stuff in selected departments stores at slightly lower prices compared to Käthe Wohlfahrt. The ranges will not be identical, though.

Looking forward to getting to the shops to look for a special range of brown ornaments I am collecting, still need about four to five to cover the hallway Christmas tree.
