Immunizations for cruise to Central & South America

We will be on a cruise visiting ports in Central and South America. Does anyone know which shots are required and those that would be better to have but not required?

You can go to the following CDC website, enter in the country names you are traveling to, and it will show suggested immunizations. Please also check with your physician if there are extenuating circumstances.

Did the Amazon River cruise last November.

 

We contracted a travel medicine facility, Passport Health, for information and inoculations.

 

We had HepA&B (a three shot series), Typhoid and Yellow Fever. We also had a script for Malaria pills we took for a portion of the cruise. Overkill, possibly, but after online reading and consultation with PH, that series fit out comfort level.

 

As I recall, the only inoculation that Oceania 'strongly recommended' was the yellow fever.

We did the West Coast of South America, Panama Canal and Caribbean this year. Only immunizations cited by CDC were for Peru. But digging deeper , the east side of the Andees (Amazon) was of concern with yellow fever. Other than that no concern unless you have immune deficiency. Machu Pichu was too high in altitude and it was the dry season.

 

You need to do some deep dive into research and it depends where you plan to visit.

You should talk with your Doctor to be sure basic Immunizations are up to date

Your cruise invoice and documents will let you know what is advised. You can always check with CDC, as well as any reputable travel doctor.

 

We are doing Amazon and Caribbean later this month ... took the yellow fever vaccine, as well as oral typhoid. Our travel doc, who is quite conservative and proactive, advised us not to bother with the malaria pills, but did give us a very good mosquito repellent, as well as a spray for our clothing.

 

BTW, we are both over 60 yrs old, and he said the chances of a reaction to the yellow fever vaccine are so low that we should go ahead with it. Neither of us had any reaction.

I don't think I would take the malaria pills unless you go far from the coast. I had a horrible reaction to them, but my husband did not. It is a chance you take.
