Many if not most TV's play will MPEG or MP4 videos. Keep in mind that the remote supplied doesn't let you change ports on the TV.

On the Crown there's nothing extra needed to change the input other than their remote but they still son't play mp4 filed directly like a smart TV. You'll need something such as a DVD player or WD-TV unit to feed it a signal.

WOW! Thanks, We have a remote. It's universal and will just take the portable player and get some DVDs at out library. They have lots and will let us keep them xtra.

I have found on regal and royal that selecting different inputs

was blocked in the tv firmware.

Easy enough to use an app on many phones, to test.

No need to carry have a special remote.

Of course, since I found this on 2 ships I probably should

simply make a pronouncement that it is that way everywhere...

I had luck on the Royal utilizing their input with the ViewSonic TV's. It can be unplugged & used for your equipment-DVD player, cameras. etc. The volume was the only thing that didn't work properly but using the controls on the front of the TV did work.

The input on the Samsung is not as convenient & very had to get to.

As a side note- all the crew had given up using DVD players. They've resorted to smart phones to view movies. Most of them don't even bother with carrying computers any longer & just rely on their phones to do everything.

a universal remote phone app.

Agree completely.

25 years ago, when all the waiters on princess were italian,

they like to show off by having a rolex.

Now, the status symbol seems to be the latest iPhone.

A couple years ago, I went on a cruise with a friend a

few days after the iPhone 6 was released in the US.

He was swarmed like a celebrity, by crew interested in

seeing the phone.

And I wouldn't use a DVD either, too much packing volume for

the hours of entertainment. mp4 video on flash memory

is probably 100x more compact. I have 1 phone which is

able to do HDMI out, so it is often possible to send to a TV.

Very interesting. What phone is that?

btw- the guys with an iphone all wish they had a Samsung so they could share the latest movies.

3-4 years ago, there were some phone that could connect to HDMI

directly -- like Motorola Atrix. These are pretty much obsolete, now.

I have a Samsung Galaxy 3, and a Galaxy Tab 3, 10.1

They both have MHL output.

(note that most newer Samsung devices do not have MHL output)

For many devices, there is an MHL to HDMI adapter which does the trick.

This is a (partial) list of MHL devices:

http://www.mhltech.org/devices.aspx

Any direct connection seems to be unpopular, as it's trendy

to connect (share) wirelessly. This is difficult to do on ships,

where you can't fool with the television.

The price of being cool.

I've been reading that there are cables to connect a Samsung (android) to HDMI. I'll have to do more reading when off the ship.

Anyway you can connect to the ships input & use that one for your phone but the quality on a large screen isn't all that great and I would hate to use movie files of 2 meg each in my phone in order to use it on the ship.

If I could transfer them from a hard drive to my phone it be OK but there's no cable I know of to connect the phone to the HD.

Read some of the user reviews before buying.

A lot of the review say things like "doesn't work", for some dongles.

That sounds like a lot of apps that don't work on my Samsung. Everyone else doesn't seem to have a many problems as I do.

Even an app like SHAREit which seemed to work for everyone else on the ship didn't work properly for me. It worked once or twice & it failed ever since.

Don't know about the newer Regal/Royal but on the ships we have been on an Apple TV has worked great hooked up to the existing HDMI port. The latest Apple TV (4th Gen) has onboard storage so you can copy MP4's and your music to it to playback while on board. We also use it to "Airplay" Photos/Videos we take throughout the cruise.

It does NOT require you to be connected to the internet but it is connected to the shipboard intranet. This means anyone on the network can airplay to it. We were watching a video when someone onboard spammed us with some Japanese cartoon porn. Funny at the time but if your 5 year old was watching Little Mermaid it might not be so funny.

I just got a Samsung Galaxy S8+, it has a USB-C connector, and is able to output HDMI

using a USB-C --> HDMI cable.

This is the first new samsung phone to be able to output HDMI in a few years.

Sounds great. :( I'll have something to look forward to when I update in a few more years. As long as I take care of my S6 it might last a while.

You can get a BOGO on the samsung website on the S8 / S8+, with a trade-in of the S6
