After booking a cruise for 7 May on the Spender for a six day cruise. I noticed on the Itinerary that we depart at 9:00 PM at night. I called Carnival and they said they had to load more supplies and that is why we are leaving late, plus they said that it would count as a PORT OF CALL !: Should be a 5 day cruise .

Had something like that happen to us before and it was Carnival out if New Orleans. We spent the night in the port of NOLA and so we missed one port of call.

The full reason would have something to do with the ship re positioning from Miami to it's temporary Ft Lauderdale (Port Everglades) home that day from Miami.

The ship gets into Miami on that Sunday morning May 7th. It usually takes a few hours to debark the passengers off the ship and get it cleared to "0" thru customs/immigration. That could be roughly 11-11:30AM.

And although the 23 mile drive from Port Miami up to Port Everglades via I-95/595 at 60 MPH is only 25-30 minutes without traffic, the ship takes a slightly different route at a considerably slower speed. Especially when you consider getting out of Government Cut and into and tying up securely at the pier at PE.

So it's probably going to arrive at PE around 3PM and maybe begin boarding around 3:30 - 4PM.

Then yes, both passengers AND supplies have to be loaded so if you were told the delay was to load supplies you were given a half correct partial explanation. The ship will then sail at 9PM.

The Splendor then will sail every week from Port Everglades until October 14th.

On October 22nd, the day the ship drops it's last Port Everglades passengers in the morning and returns to Miami as a home port again, the set sail departure time is scheduled for 8PM that evening.

And now you know ............ the rest of the story. (PH)

I would enjoy taking the time to explore. And if it is sport I knew I could some shopping and send it to my home. At least you are on a cruise.

I'm reading more and more of this. I wonder what's going on? Using this as an excuse because turn around takes longer being there's less workers on the ship/more cabins per steward to turn around?

They seem to be mirroring what they have been doing out of San Juan for decades.

What difference does it make?

They could have 25 cabin stewards per cabin making up rooms for turnaround. It makes no difference because the ship needs to offload passengers in Miami on the morning of May 7th and head up to Ft Lauderdale to re-position it's departure port and sail from there later the same day on May 7th.

I thought I laid out a pretty good approximate timeline in my original response to this thread.. Unloading and storing the multiple truckloads of supplies does take a few hours.

Carnival did not suddenly change the departure time from the normal 4PM - 5PM. It was listed as a 9PM departure from the 1st day the ship could be booked last year. All the rest of the Splendor's Ft Lauderdale departures, until next October, are at 4PM.

The regular San Juan late departures are done for a different reason. It has to do with airline flights from the mainland US which are not as plentiful as into South Florida ... take an additional 2 1/2 hours more time than Miami... and in many cases would involve connections for people who do not live near a major hub airport.

You should still get ON the ship before noon, just like any other sailing!

You can't. The Splendor on that day is most likely going to be 3-5 miles offshore at noon traveling between Port Miami and Port Everglades.

No, you have it wrong, Carnival is always trying to screw people over and just make random changes. {sarcasm off}

Thanks for clearing up the OP's confusion.

Is this a seven day cruise knocked down to five?

Are you being charged for a seven day ?

Carnival has made quite a few moves like this with no compensation to their customers .

It's 6 Night cruise from Sunday May 6th to Saturday May 13th , that has always been a 6 Night cruise that was never changed from a 7.

The week's following departure (May 13th) is a Saturday to Sunday 8 Nighter, followed by a 6 followed by an 8 followed by a 6 followed by an 8.

6/8/6/8/6/8/6/8 and so on. All leaving at 4PM. Same schedule the Conquest and Liberty previously did from Port Everglades since 2009. The only exceptions are in September 2017 for 2 weeks with a 5/4/5.

Sometimes changes do occur due to weather, medical emergencies or mechanical issues, but since you say "Carnival has made quite a few moves like this with no compensation" can you provide just 1 example of a Carnival cruise shortened by a day or 2 with no compensation to the passengers?

And since you have to miss lunch on May 7 due to late boarding, they made that cruise $30 cheaper than the other 6 day cruises. :)

Well to make a fair comparison.. The Conquest is also leaving Port Everglades that same day (May 7th) on a 6 night Western leaving at 4PM to Ocho Rios, Grand Cayman and Cozumel.

Cheapest Balcony Early Saver is $824 per person

The 9PM Splendor is going on a 6 Night Eastern to Nassau, Half Moon, Grand Turk and Amber Cove (DR).

Cheapest Balcony Early Saver is $769 per person

So it's $55 per person ($110 Cabin Total) cheaper. And besides Nassau, a way nicer overall itinerary.

But no lunch.

As long as the are allowing you to board in to afternoon, what does it matter if you are just onboard ship or at sea?

It matters to me. There are amenities that are only open once at sea, such as the casino. It's a small thing, but to each his/her own. That said, I'd still find a way to have fun despite being initially a little bummed.
