NCL Sun Deck 8 Aft Balcony Question

We are contemplating going on a South America Cruise on the Sun in December, 2017. We are looking at booking an Aft balcony on deck 8, either 8078 or 8278. Does anyone have information about these cabins? Is there a lot of noise from deck 7? Is the aft balcony larger on this deck vs. the aft balconies on deck 9 or 10?

We appreciate anything you can tell us or if you have pictures, please post them.

Thank you

Here is a youtube video from 2012 of aft facing balcony stateroom 8078

There could be some noise from the theater below but nothing like being over a night club. If an aft facing balcony on 9 was available I'd take it instead but wouldn't be afraid of the deck 8 location.

I would definitely book a Deck 9 aft balcony instead if one is available. We were on the Sun back in October and were in an aft mini suite on Deck 9 and it was a great location!

Cabin 8278 was one of the cabins viewed on our cabin crawl. The cabin crawl was during an afternoon and it happened to coincide during a time that rehearsals were going on in the theater below and you could definitely hear it and it was quite loud. We could also literally feel in our legs the vibrations coming through the floor. We also saw these cabin occupants several other times during the cruise and they mentioned how loud it was on multiple occasions during the afternoon rehearsals and the evening shows and commented they would never book Deck 8 aft again. They also mentioned it was so loud that they couldn't go to sleep in the evenings until late after the shows were over, after 11:00 p.m. For what it's worth.

You are aware that all aft cabins on deck 8 are immediately over the Stardust

Theatre on decks 6 & 7. Some are going to be more prime noisy than others.

And all this is dependent on the type of entertainment.

Also note the stage is actually on deck 6 and the underside of deck 8 is where

all the catwalks lighting and rigging for deck 7 is.

The Stardust Theatre is used a quite a bit during the day but it is the night

time entertainment that raises the volume quotient. During the day the

Theatre is used for duty free shopping shore excursion seminars bingo and

show performers doing their tryouts and practice sessions but generally no

loud music. NCL generally has three shows a night two really really big ones

7-9 and 9-11 the after 11 show is toned down to a voice level featuring a

comedian. The earlier shows are big brass band stuff.

You should be ok as long as you are not turning in early at night.

I would say the worse noise that you might encounter is the ships thrusters

positioning the ship in and out of port.

Regarding the balcony space - look at the NCL website for photos of the

aft cabins and note that the rear end of the ship is like a step pyramid - your

deck 8 cabins stick further out aft than the deck 9 which more than deck 10.

Above 10 is deck 11 the Great Outdoors buffet and bar and hidden in the

buffet corner is the soft serve ice cream machine (I know nothing about that) !

Hope other CC readers will add their commentary about this mighty fine ship !

Thanks everybody for the quick responses. That is a great YouTube video of the deck 8 cabin.

My concern was the noise from the Theater on Deck 6/7. So I think I will heed everyone's advice and try to book an aft balcony on Deck 9.

I was on the Sun several years ago, but I did not have an aft balcony. I am looking forward to being on the ship again.

Have a great Christmas and Holiday season.

:) We loved our stay in 9077 :)

The bakery smells great.

One drawback was a little soot on the balcony chairs.

.

I was in 9077 for the late September repositioning from Vancouver to San Diego. I LOVED that cabin. I was prepared for soot based on prior info, but lucked out and never got any. I'd do that cabin again in a heartbeat!! [emoji846]

Solution to the SOOT STORM - have your cabin attendant wipe the deck chairs

off with a wet towel from the bath. You could do this yourself and in the process

determine when the most soot is a recurring event - at night ? during the day ?

or just when the Captain puts the pedal to the floor and soot billows out of the

screening smoke stack (take cover - especially in trailing winds).

Also you could tell the bridge crew that it is not appreciated when you are hosting

a "White Hot Party" and it becomes a not so white hot party ! LOL !

So don't leave your fashionable whites out on the balcony deck unattended.

Or do what we did when we were in 9077 round the horn, and use the otherwise unused beach towels as chair covers. We kept them rolled and on the loveseat beside the door for easy access. And if one of us was napping on the chaise in the balcony, the other rolled towel made a great pillow.
