dog Posted December 31, 2016 #1 Share Posted December 31, 2016 We will be in Sendai next April. I have not been able to find any cruisers who have stopped there. Where will Celebrity dock? Any ideas for DIY excursions ? Public transportation? (I heard of the loope bus, but where do you catch it?) Any suggestions of interesting sights or things to do will be welcome. Thanks dog:)
Rare Hlitner Posted December 31, 2016 #2 Share Posted December 31, 2016 Fascinating (to me) that a cruise goes to Sendai. When I lived in Japan (68-70) we drove down to Sendai (from Misawa) for a weekend and simply enjoyed the city (we love to walk). If you are adventurous and love natural beauty you might consider just taking a regional train to Matsushima (about 30 min ride). Otherwise, just enjoy the city, its shops, shrines, food, etc. Hank

Thanks dog:) I have used the Sendai metro system for my one-day sightseeing in Sendai. I also saw the Loop Bus but did not use it. For sightseeing ideas, you can refer to the following website: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5150.html The Zuihoden Mausoleum is very beautiful. I also enjoyed the famous local dish of grilled beef tongue (Gyutan). There are several gyutan restaurants on the 2nd foor of the Sendai Train Station. dog Posted December 31, 2016 Author #4 Share Posted December 31, 2016 (edited) I have been using the Japan guide you mention-a good resource. I cannot find out about the cruise ship dock to figure out where we will be in relation to town. This is our last stop after Aomori before returning to Yokohama on the Celebrity Millenium this April. The ship offers only 3 excursions that take you away from the town and I'm not interested in doing them, so we will try to get to town and use the loope bus. dog:) Edited December 31, 2016 by dog
someotherguy Posted January 1, 2017 #5 Share Posted January 1, 2017 According to http://www.cruisetimetables.com/cruises-to-sendai-japan.html (click on the map link) the Millenium will use the industrial port 8 or 9 miles East of Sendai. This is also used by the ferries to Nagoya and Hokkaido and according to http://www.taiheiyo-ferry.co.jp/english/koro/sendai.html (scroll down) you take a bus or taxi to Tagajo station, or a very infrequent bus (timed for the ferry schedule) to Sendai Station. I'd imagine Celebrity or the port will put on shuttle buses to either Tagajo or Sendai. Once you're at Tagajo Station, you can go to Sendai in one direction or Matsushima in the other. Matsushima Bay is traditionally one of the top three scenic sights in Japan http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5101.html I've been there and it is very scenic. Train schedules are here http://www.hyperdia.com For Sendai you want one of the SENDAI(MIYAGI...) entries and for the Matsushima cruises you want MATSUSHIMAKAIGAN or HON-SHIOGAMA (exactly as I've written them).
