milford_cruiser Posted January 14, 2017 #1 Share Posted January 14, 2017 I hear amazing things about the scuba diving in Belize, but there doesn't appear to be any ship's excursions (Royal Caribbean) that do diving. Snorkel yes, scuba no. A thread search doesn't have any results newer than 2011. Anyone have any recommendations for private scuba trips or information about why ships are no longer offering scuba trips? Thanks!
ABQrobin Posted January 14, 2017 #2 Share Posted January 14, 2017 Here is the thing....yes, Belize has great scuba diving, but the reefs that are great are waaaay far away from where the ships dock. They are out from the outer islands, and hours away. So...cruise ships used to have a scuba excursion, through Hugh Parkey Scuba, where they would pick people up at the ship, and 2 hour boat ride, stop at dive shop to get geared up, 2 dives, then 2 hour boat ride back to ships. It was an 8 hour excursion. That dive op has since decided to stop servicing the cruise ships. Just my 2 cents... Belize is not a great port for scuba diving from a cruise ship. It is just too far out to the better reefs. Some dive ops may take you scuba diving, but they are going to hit something closer by. If you want to do the great Belize scuba dive locations, you need to do a land-based vacation where you stay out on one of the outer islands, like Ambergris Cay. Tons of oportunity from there since you are closer to the reefs.
milford_cruiser Posted January 15, 2017 Author #3 Share Posted January 15, 2017 Thanks, ABQrobin. That's helpful. I'll check out Roatan or Costa Maya as other options.

zqvol Posted January 15, 2017 #5 Share Posted January 15, 2017 Much better diving at Roatan than at Belize. It's even incredible from shore so you can avoid long boat rides if you want.
