NCL Spirit Currently in Dry Dock

5 days is too short for a full Norwegian Edge upgrade.

We sailed on the Spirit last April and at that time, they had planed for an extended dry dock (4 weeks) to bring the ship up to current standards. (Get rid of all of the asian and roman decor). Later in the year, they cut that back to the 5-day dry dock.

Just speculating that they decided not to update the oldest ship in the fleet, and her days as a Norwegian ship will be limited.

I hope NCL keeps the spirit and leaves the ship as is. Upgrading the cabins would be great but the observation lounge and raffles outdoor eating area is what makes this ship great. Also love the casino with the bar/ night club. I thought the Asian theme was wonderful. Loved the pool deck. That pool deck has class. Would be nice if NCL home ported her in Boston.

I have been tracking the Spirt, something to do on a cold day in England. She left dry dock in Marseilles on Friday and went to Barcelona. The next cruise was due to leave yesterday, 21st, but the ship is still moored in Barcelona! I am on the 13th Feb cruise. I would have preferred the current cruise but it didn't exist when I booked and it was too expensive to change.

I would imagine there is a technical problem that stopped her leaving yesterday. I will keep tracking and post if I find out anything.

I agree, I loved the feel of the Spirit when I was on her quite awhile back. The grand foyer is something that is missing from some of the newer ships nowadays. The main staircase, glass elevators.

One of my best memories is sipping a martini at Champagne Charlie's listening to a wonderful entertainer who sounded almost identical to the great Frank Sinatra.

Galaxy of the Stars was also another favourite place, I didn't have a balcony room for that cruise, just an ocean view, so we spent a lot of time up there, enjoying the views to Alaska :)

I was just thinking that maybe they've done some small interior repairs, refreshers, etc. The Spirit in my opinion is the perfect size ship, not too big, not too small.

I really hope they don't get rid of her, I'm looking forward to sailing on her again in August, I can't wait!

I totally agree with your comments. We also like the 360 degree promenade.

We sailed on her twice last April and are sailing her again twice this upcoming April.

We really like the look and feel which is really missing on the mega ships IMOHO.

I'm with you.

I'd love to see Spirit return to Boston.

These comments are making me even more excited to sail on the Spirit. DH and I will be sailing on the Spirit for the first time in May. She looks like such a classic and stately ship. Nothing like the new builds. Really looking forward to 14 days in the Mediterranean! We are less than 2 weeks from final payment date and just today I was able to get a $700 price drop on our balcony cabin! So that is making me even more excited for this trip now! :D

We Cruise a little, but, I'm curious, how did you find out about that $700 price drop ? Did you or your TA get it ? Did you change to a different balcony cabin ? Or keep the same one ? We're cruising on the Spirit in October. Thanks in advance.

We are in the same balcony cabin as we originally booked. We booked this cruise nearly a year ago (in February 2016) so I've been periodically watching for price drops. Since we are close to final payment date I checked the NCL website again today and noticed the major difference. What's really strange is on the NCL website for BA category today it stated the price was $2,059 pp (we originally booked at $2,329 pp), but when I called NCL to get that price difference she booked it at $1,976 pp, so even more of a savings I wasn't expecting! Odd to me that the price the rep gave me was lower than what was listed on the website. But no complaints here! We did lose 2 nights on the SDP (when we booked it was 6 nights, but the promo is now 4 nights SDP). But for a $700 price drop it's not a big deal losing 2 nights of specialty dining!

I see you are cruising on the Spirit in October. I would just keep watching for price drops (that may or may not happen), especially as you get closer to final payment date.

  • 3 weeks later...

I was on the last sailing of the Spirit. Let me say that I knew going into it this was not a new ship. However, I thought NCL and comparable companies had minimum standards. If anything was refurbished, I couldn't tell. The ship is old. My cabin had more defects than my last 10 cabins combined. The common areas are not great in my opinion, but better than my stateroom. It is a hodgepodge. The Asian theme exists in most of the ship, but the pool, spa and main dining room have a Roman theme. Makes no sense to me. Cagney's steakhouse has an Asian decor. The flow is bad on the ship.

There was more wear on the ship than I've seen before in 10+ cruises. More rust. More torn carpet.

In my cabin (outside), they put a panel on the wall to cover something. Like if you had a huge hole in your wall at home and you just screwed a piece of drywall on rather than fixing it properly. There was another panel with marker on the wall like they were going to do something and decided not to. The carpet was frayed. There was a 4 inch open seam on the chair. The bed had nightstand on only one side and around 12 inches to get into bed on the one side. The clothesline didn't retract. A ceiling light was missing a cover. I could go on and on. Almost all of these things were cosmetic.

I am comparing the Spirit to the cruises I've taken on NCL, RC and Celebrity. I've taken 5 NCL cruises.

Is this post dry dock? This makes me very nervous as the cruise we booked is not cheap. The pictures of inside cabins I have seen are little better than a cheap motel. I would not be happy if the rooms are not in good repair with decent furnishings, carpets and bedding.

According to what I read, it was. It was 2/2 to 2/13.

I'm posting a picture as an example from next to my bed in the cabin in case people think I am picky or crazy.
