No Serenity Deck - What do I do?

Hi all,

Did a quick search and didn't find this addressed anywhere. (I apologize if this is a double post)

Both cruises I have been on have had Serenity Decks. One was in winter, and we had 2 hot tubs, one in April had a pool and hot tub... I'm beginning to think that this has spoiled me a bit. - (And the yellow towels!)

I've got a February cruise on a boat without the Serenity Deck - what is normal protocol? Is there an unspoken rule or etiquette? How do you cope without this privilege? Am I over reacting?

Thanks, P

After our first time on the Breeze and experience with a Serenity Deck, we too miss it when a ship doesn't have that area. But we tend to find areas around the ship that are quiet and secluded to "get away" from the rest of the crowd.

What ship are you sailing on?

For sun- best we have found is the back of the ship one deck above Lido.

Sometimes, the sitting area alongside the Casino before noon is nice and quite for people watching.

Inside above Buffet on Lido near the back for eating is nice and quiet.

Just keep searching, you will find areas.

IF you tell people the ship they may be able to help you more intelligently.

We have been on ships with and without.

Sometimes there is an adult pool but not an actual "serenity" area.

IF you are just looking for calm and quiet you can find that on any ship.

Since you have asked, it will be on the Triumph.

I'd be curious about how it goes on a variety of ships. We did choose to sail just before the Spring Break season. February 27...

One time we sailed the last week of January and saw maybe 4 children the whole time.

Out of New Orleans, 5 day.

New Orleans, which is a great port, I have found more families tend to sail from there. While you will find that the longer cruises (7 & 8 day), usually you find less kids. I think you find more kids with the combination of New Orleans and shorter cruises. Combine that with close (or during) Spring break, good luck with trying to get away from children.

Still, like I said before, you can find nice quiet spots around the ship everywhere.

You chose just before Spring Break and right smack in the middle of Mardi Gras.

Kids are out school here. You'll have tons of little ones. Engjoy!

Yup. You are going to have a ton of kids on that cruise with you.

That being said, there are always quiet places to be found on the ship. We also prefer to use the hot tubs later at night - typically no one in them, and no need for sunscreen!

We were just on the Triumph in December for my b-day.

The pool in the back with the 2 hot tubs was much quieter than the main pool where the Rum Bar and burger joint is located.

Here's the deck plan so you can see what I mean:

Sadly the Triumph was my least favorite ship so far.

We had a great time but the lines and organization in general were worse than I have experienced on any other ship.

If you want an area that's relatively quiet, and don't need to be in the sun or near the pool, Deck 3 (Lobby deck) has chairs and/or lounge chairs on both sides. Stop by the Atrium Bar, get a beverage, then go out and find a chair where you can relax, read a book, take photos (or videos) of the ocean, or just sit and watch for sea life (flying fish, dolphins, etc.). ;)

I think I'll live on Dream's Serenity Deck!

Do they close that area or is it open 24/7?

They do turn down the lights, but it isn't closed off. We have spent time up on serenity at all hours of the night and nobody ever bothered us. We have even brought the extra blanket from our cabin when we were sailing in an inside cabin and wanted to watch the stars at night. We have also seen other folks up there from time to time. Kids like to hide up there together at night, and we have fun with that ;)

The outdoor promenade on deck 3 is usually nice and quiet. Great sea views too. There should be loungers. My only issue is that one side is smoking and the other is non-smoking and some smokers don't bother to make sure that they are on the correct side. It would help if there were signs.

When someone steps out to smoke, they tend not to wander too far away from the entrance to the lobby. Unless I'm mistaken, there are signs posted on the non-smoking side, which I believe is the port side. Typically, someone will only stay out on the deck just long enough to smoke, then go right back in. If you choose a seat a few yards away from the entrance area, especially if you're upwind, you won't be bothered by the smoke.

We were recently on Conquest, which does not have a Serenity Deck. We did not miss it at all, because the aft lido pool is adult only. Two hot tubs and plenty of lounge chairs (as well as table and chairs in the shade around the deck -DH likes the shade, while I enjoy the hot tub, so this is perfect for us.) A bar is located there as well as strolling waiters. And a retractable roof for when weather is bad. Much preferable to a "too-sunny" Serenity deck.
