Laundry question

This is going to sound like a dumb question but how does the laundry work on the Dream?

DW and I will soon go on our 6th cruise. The 5 previous have been 5 day cruises so we could pack enough to prevent needing the laundry service. This one will be a 7-day one. [emoji4]

I will be on vacation so I don't want to wait around for the washer/dryer to finish. Likewise, I don't want to pay $$$$ for the wash/dry /fold/press/tie a bow around it service either.

The "stuff a bag" service sounds good as it will mostly be socks and drawers. Is that only on certain days? I haven't paid attention before but will they let us know, like in the Fun Times?

Can someone please give me the skinny on this?

The washer usually runs for about 50 minutes. We put the laundry in, then head over to Lido deck for breakfast. Come back to laundry room and put items in dryer. The dryer can take up to 60 minutes depending on what you put in it. Then we head down to the casino for an hour and come back and get our laundry. The dryers run really hot.

You can do the stuff-a-bag thing every day except the last one as it takes up to 24 hours. $15 per bag I think, bag is made of paper and can rip...more of an envelope really but it should get the job done for you.

It's amazing how much can be stuffed into that paper bag. Only send out sturdy, previously washed clothes. Nothing delicate, nothing that'll bleed.

Your clothes are put into a mesh bag. The mesh bag is thrown into the machine with other mesh bags. Washed on hot, dried on hot.

Take a picture of what's being sent out. Mom has two amusing laundry stories, one about a missing sock and another about a shirt.

My mom and I will be on the Legend on May 8th. We will be gone for 16 days. My mom refuses to fly if she doesn't have to, so we will be taking Amtrak from New Orleans. I will do laundry at our hotel in Seattle and once or twice on the ship.

Are the self-service machines the same on every ship or are there different models?

Where do you put the detergent: in the drum or a separate drawer? Do you have to use a particular type of detergent(powder, liquid, pod)? I saw a few pictures that were taken from the doorway of a laundry room(can't remember which ship). I couldn't tell if any of the washing machines had a separate drawer.

Does anyone have pictures of the machines on the Legend?

Machines are typical laundrymat top loaders. Single load.

Because the water is so soft they use less detergent than you probably use at home. Also use less detergent because the machines are puny.

We use a half of a Purex sheet in a sweater bag. Has enough detergent and softener for a full load onboard.

I don't know if all ship's laundry rooms are the same or not but here's what I found on the Conquest in February.

There were four washers and four driers with a number on each machine. Each cost $3. The washers were very large capacity. You could use either coins or on the opposite wall was a small metal box that had a key pad on it. You could swipe your card, then enter the number of the machine you wanted to use.

Apparently they haven't changed the screens on the end of the hoses because it took well over ten minutes to fill the machine with water.

There is a sink and an ironing board in the room. The ironing board is the only place where you could fold the clothes after drying them. No folding table. There also was a machine for vending soap and softener. If I remember right, they were $1 each.

If you choose to use the $15 per bag of laundry, roll the dirty clothes as tight as you possible can. That way you can stuff quite a bit of laundry in the bag. If we use it, one bag will come back in two bags as they fold the clothes instead of rolling them. I will caution that they use extremely hot water and hot drying. The elastic on my underwear came back looking like fried bacon, all wrinkled.
