Escape - Deluxe Owner's Suite - Balcony useless @ sea ??

I'm looking at a sailing next year on the Escape. Both deck 17 DOS are available. I've seen a couple of YouTube videos which show an impressive balcony, but I'm wondering if all that real estate is at all usable while at sea -- owing to perhaps the angle of the front of the ship deflecting a portion of the wind. My guess is "no"! :D

I know that there's a secondary (side) balcony, but it obviously pales in comparison.

Thanks,

Tom

From what I've read, the forward-facing balcony isn't "useless" but it can be windy while standing. While sitting, the plexiglass (whatever it is) shield blocks most of the wind. The potential of windy days (and the price) is probably the biggest thing keeping me from the OS or DOS on Escape.

A Bermuda trip on Escape might get me to try it because of the days in port.

I'm looking at two sailings ... the other being the Carnival Vista, where a Grand Suite (I use the term "Grand" VERY loosely w/regard to Carnival suites) is almost $6k. I can get, with a casino discount on NCL, the DOS for about $10k.

With NCL there's all the Haven perks (butler, less crowded, suite restaurant, etc), included UBP, UDP, Wifi, Shore Ex credits, whereas on Carnival you get a dinky balcony, but a bidet in your bathroom...

I've stayed in the Haven OS on the Epic, Jade & Gem & never found the wind to be an issue. Sure if ship was underway & you stood at the railing only understandable there would be wind but if sitting down not a problem.

Tom & Cheryl..............(revised after posting: Oops, I read the signature line of dlynn0366 thinking it was you both and she is sailing on the 18th of March, not you guys, what a boob I am)

I can't believe it. We are on the March 25th sailing of The Escape. Let us know what cruise you choose, we would love to sail with you! THAT would be An Adventure!

I hope you enjoy The DOS on The Escape and the Huuuuuuuge Casino. As you know, Jerome and I are sailing our third time in 9 months on The Escape, March 25th to complete the Trilogy of "The Adventures", we really love it, especially the Casino. The only drawback with the Haven on the Escape vs the other ships is that there are so many more "Family" Suites up there and on the last two sailings (June 2016 and August 2016) the central Haven pool and hot tubs were filled with lots of little children, should I say, Noisy little children, and babes in diapers in the shallow end of the water features. It was a realization to the increased Family type accommodations in the Haven. But the only issue on the Escape for us at all, is the pool situation. The main pool is shoulder to shoulder and there is no Spice H2O pool, only a water feature. 4,200 folks and one main pool.

But, what am I saying, you have your own water feature in your gorgeous DOS Haven Suite! Although if we know you, there will be no time for pools, only time for the Casino, just like JW. We get so much more on Norwegian and are much happier with the CAS Perks vs Carnival products.

2 pools. 1 family pool and 1 adult pool on deck 16.

Yes, I know that. I have described them all in The JW and Jerome's Adventures.

But since Tom and Cheryl, Jerome and Myself are adults usually traveling without children, I omitted the one pool that we would not ever use. But the fact remains, they should have included the 3rd pool in Spice H2O, as originally planned, and which is also on The EPIC, instead of the "Water Grotto" which is useless, except when feeling romantic, late at night ;p

Looking forward to our little piece of heaven, if only for a few short days! :)

Pretty lame reply, was that meant to be funny?

Great question though, I wonder if that is a problem, I hadn't thought of that. Although when sailing the Getaway last year, the Haven upper area deck was at the front of the ship, and while it was windy, those glass panels provided a decent block.

We didn't spend a lot of time on the balcony, but when we did it didn't seem to be very windy. Mostly we would relax on the loungers enjoying the view when arriving and leaving a port. We never once used the "baby balcony". We'll be in the DOS again in August and we plan on using the balcony more often. Windy or not! [emoji18]

We used the huge balcony every day in September. I don't recall it ever being too windy to use. We used the smaller balcony once when it was raining because it offered more protection than the forward balcony. The DOS with the large balcony has been our favorite room to date. We have stayed in many suites on many cruise lines from Carnival to SilverSeas. The layout is great and it does not have much wasted space like a huge foyer or space for the piano. We brought along my sister and brother in law as guests and they easily stayed in the 2nd room.

The Haven was a little slice of Heaven. Every time we ventured out to eat at a specialty restaurant, enjoy the fitness area, Casino or ropes course we would return and breathe a sigh of relief from the hustle and bustle of the main ship. It is like living in the quiet suburbs but enjoying what the big city has to offer.

Excellent - looking forward even more to the DOS on our Escape and Bliss sailings. :)

Do you have any pics of the 2nd room made up with the bed down?

We've stayed in the BA DOS and the wind isn't an issue pretty much while sitting down. Also have Escape DOS booked for next year on 17. The ones on 17 look much deeper than the ones on BA (and 18 on Escape) so that should be nice. I'd also think sitting back there you'd be pretty well shielded. The 2nd balcony is separate and accessible from the master bed/bath area.

Trying to get pic of 2nd room with bed down.

dexddd, I'm sorry no photos. I can tell you that it is kindof like a Murphy bed and it.

comes down from the wall. If you check images you will see a silver Handle on the wall and that is how you pull it down.

It is a full or queen size bed. I'm not sure which. My sister is 5'8 around 130 lbs and her husband is about 5'10 and probably 170 lbs. They were comfortable in the bed.

The side next to the wall is close to the wall. No room for a night stand or table. The foot of the bed is close to the wall also but my sister who slept on the inside was able to get through with out bumping her knees. Her only complaint was there was no plug in to charge her phone next to her side of the bed so her phone (which is also her alarm) had to rest on the desk so she had to get up to turn off her alarm.

Hope this helps. It really is a nice room. It is at the end of the hall so it is quiet. We loved having the Haven yet still having the huge fitness room available. We would love to cruise on some of the smaller ships but the fitness room is a deal breaker for us. If it is too small and not enough weights it's a no go. This offers our own little quiet space plus the benefits of a large ship.

I've got the DOS on deck 18 booked for this May (18102 to be exact). I can report back afterwards with wind conditions, if you're willing to stay patient a little while longer! ;)

Itching to find a time in my schedule to book a suite on the new Celebrity Edge! Perhaps in 2020 !

I'd probably opt for an EDGE VILLA, though the ICONIC SUITE looks amazing (need good friends to chip in $20K for their share for the week for that one)!!

They're definitely taking a page from NCL's playbook (Haven concept) by setting aside a section of the ship for suite guests.

So I'm not sure if there will be much difference between deck 17 and 18 (we were on 18), but it was pretty darn windy on sea days. You could avoid some of the wind by sitting on a lounge chair, which were shielded by the glass partition, but you'd also have to be okay with having windswept hair for the day. :)

Also, 18 can get a ridiculous amount of sun...and rain. Without any deck above, you have full exposure.

Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks for the info, tlc1972! We have been looking forward to your comments on the H2. Did you like the DOS? And how was the bed size in the second bedroom? Was it in fact a pull down murphy bed and did it seem to be a double bed in size or larger? Any tips? Hope you had a great trip!
