Cookiesbykk Posted November 16, 2005 #1 Share Posted November 16, 2005 Tell me it ain't so!. I know tastes vary wildly but I've read many postings about how bad the coffee aboard most Princess cruises is. We're booked on our first cruise ever (yay us!) on the Grand in January and we're big coffee drinkers...any secrets aboard this ship or suggestions? Or the possibility that everyone else is wrong and the coffee is great?! Please weigh in on this one:)
Carolyn R Posted November 16, 2005 #2 Share Posted November 16, 2005 I just got off the Sun and found for the most part the coffee was just fine. One day I must have gotten the bottom of the pot and it was awful. On the whole, I thought the coffee was OK, better than I had on Celebrity's Century last spring. spongerob Posted November 16, 2005 #4 Share Posted November 16, 2005 Coffee from room service, in the dining room, or at the bars that serve coffee and espresso is usually fine. The stuff in Horizon Court buffet can be tolerable to vile. Some people (and I'm one of them) take a coffee maker for convenience as well as to be assured of a decent cup of joe. A cheap 4-cup pot is all you need, along with filters and few of the 2 ounce sample packets of ground coffee you can get at any grocery store. I also take some small zip-lock bags to put the grounds in since the trash cans don't have liners. Honestly, I don't think the coffee is as bad as it used to be. SaylorGirl Posted November 16, 2005 #5 Share Posted November 16, 2005 I drink coffee all day long and I have no problems with the coffee on the Princess ships. Especially good is from the coffee bars you can get regular coffee for free but you have to pay for the lattes and such. The coffee in the dining room is also very good. Cookiesbykk Posted November 16, 2005 Author #6 Share Posted November 16, 2005 Not sure I want to pack a coffee pot (with this being a first cruise I'm still overwhelmed with what to pack?!) so tell me, for an early morning cup of coffee on my balcony, what's my best bet (short of coming to your cabin for a cup - you will be on my cruise after all, right?);) I just read a review on cruise diva.com on the Grand and I believe you wrote it! Hey, what does the casino have as far as tables and slots? Karen
spongerob Posted November 16, 2005 #7 Share Posted November 16, 2005 Get it from room service. There is a pre-order card that you can put the evening before with a requested delivery time. You'll be fine. I'll post the casino answer on the roll call to keep this thread on topic. :)
Douglase Posted November 16, 2005 #8 Share Posted November 16, 2005 My wife sure liked it, I thought it was a little bitter. I did like the Exprsso only $1 a cup.
houstoncruisers2001 Posted November 16, 2005 #9 Share Posted November 16, 2005 My wife drinks ALOT of coffee and she has never complained about the coffee served onboard the Grand Princess. I say, don't pack the coffee pot. Take an extra bottle of booze instead.:p
jennew Posted November 16, 2005 #10 Share Posted November 16, 2005 Wellll......We HATED the coffee on the Grand. We brought a small coffee pot and some coffee from home. We tried all the coffee on the ship and some of it was ok....but we like good coffee. Then again we are from NY so maybe that makes a difference. scubadiver77 Posted November 16, 2005 #11 Share Posted November 16, 2005 I had read some post last year before going on a Baltic Cruise on the Princess. I purchased a large carton of Folger's singles. I knew I could get hot water because I read about the single tea bags available on the Princess. I did not use a one of the Folgers single as the coffee was not bad. You might want to protect yourself by bringing some of these.
stoneharborlady Posted November 16, 2005 #12 Share Posted November 16, 2005 We had room service coffee in the morning, but brought our own 4 cup pot for occasional use.

TorontoTL Posted November 16, 2005 #14 Share Posted November 16, 2005 I'm pretty picky about coffee and I've gradually become accustomed to the coffee on Princess ships. I can't say I love it, but it is okay. At times it is horrible and i'm not sure why. It might be that it got old or the mix just wasn't right. The coffee in all of the dining rooms is made from syrup. The Patisserie Bar/Lobby Bars are made from coffee grinds and is somewhat better. I find I just pay for and have at least one cappucino or cafe latte per day and I get my coffee fix that way. There has been a price increase lately from 1.75 to 2.00 per cappucino. They are worth it though.
Pam in CA Posted November 16, 2005 #15 Share Posted November 16, 2005 I love coffee and have never gagged on the coffee in the buffet or the dining room. I think it's just fine.
CruiseFever Posted November 17, 2005 #16 Share Posted November 17, 2005 I love coffee and have never gagged on the coffee in the buffet or the dining room. I think it's just fine. Me too. I know there are those that bring their own coffee pots and coffee along and I think that's really cool for them to be able to but I've always thought the coffee was fine too. Especially in the dining room.
mek Posted November 17, 2005 #17 Share Posted November 17, 2005 The coffee and iced tea can be really strong, so I usually dilute it with hot or cold water and then it tastes just fine.

Or the possibility that everyone else is wrong and the coffee is great?! Please weigh in on this one:) We just siled on the Grand and have sailded many Princess cruises. Actually, it is not coffe, it is warmed up coffee syrup (watered to coffee consistency). It is terrible, not even brewed in the dining room. Good coffee is a must, it caps off the meal. We can not believe that Princess does not fix this.
GrammaZ Posted November 17, 2005 #19 Share Posted November 17, 2005 I have discovered from surfing these boards that coffee preference is a very personal matter and very subjective. Some love Princess coffee, some hate it. I have sailed with three shipping companies, NCL, Princess and Carnival. Princess in my opinion is the worst. So much depends on what you are used to drinking at home. If you are happy with the grocery store brands, then Princess will keep you happy. If you have discovered and enjoy blends, especially dark roasts, then Princess will not meet your standard. Baileys does improve it immensely but if that first cup in the morning has to be what starts your day right then bring on the coffeemaker with you. You can order hot water from room service to be delivered at a certain time and the french press is all you need to get a cup to your liking. As mentioned above, paying extra for that latte or expresso is also an option.
mek Posted November 17, 2005 #20 Share Posted November 17, 2005 Latte's on Princess do not compare to Starbucks. Just had one a couple of weeks ago in the CP. The price was reasonable though, $2.30.
kryos Posted November 17, 2005 #21 Share Posted November 17, 2005 Coffee from room service, in the dining room, or at the bars that serve coffee and espresso is usually fine. The stuff in Horizon Court buffet can be tolerable to vile. You know where I got my worst cup of coffee on the Island last April? At Sabatini's ... the alternative restaurant with the $20 cover charge. The dining room and Horizon Court coffee was "okay," nothing to write home about, but nothing that will leave you retching either. I hear that if you get a cup at the bar ... free ... it's not made with the syrup mix, but rather is actually brewed ... and it's pretty good. But I just never got to the bar to get one, so I have no first-hand knowledge of this. I'm just one of those people who couldn't be bothered packing a coffee pot for a cruise. If the coffee is that bad, I'd sooner just switch to tea or hot chocolate. Blue skies ... --rita
torpeedo Posted November 17, 2005 #22 Share Posted November 17, 2005 The coffee was horrible on the Carribean Princess. I think they still use that Liquid coffee. Was terrible all over the ship except for the ground coffe at the Coffee bar. Years ago most ships used the liquid coffee. We sail HAL, RCI, and Carnival and their coffee has improved 100% and is very good. This was our first Princess cruise and we expected better..
