grandmarnnurse Posted July 6, 2017 #226 Share Posted July 6, 2017 I may have posted this already, as this thread has been going on for quite some time, so I apologize in advance if I did---lol! I have a very strict budget that I follow to a "T", as my hubby and I are retired, so it is a must. But one of our monthly bills that is just as important as gas, electric, etc--is our vacation fund. I put $200 month in this account. It's not just for a once yearly cruise, but travel to visit our children out of state. Travel is VERY important to us, so we make this account a priority. I get really irritated when people ask how two retired folks can afford to travel--as the puff on their cigarettes, while holding their Starbucks! my kids mama Posted July 16, 2017 #227 Share Posted July 16, 2017 We also cruise a couple of times a year. We have had the same feelings from people around us. We are self employed, not rich, but better off then we used to be. We take advantage of bounce back casino promotions and we book in advance. Most important, we use a credit card for our business that gives us travel points. We can use the points for air, hotel, cruise, etc..... It usually covers almost half of our trip. I never feel guilty planning our vacation because I know some of it will be covered. We do have to fly to any port as we live in Denver. Still a good value though, even if we purchase the cheers option. I have done the math. Where else can your family go to several different Caribbean locations for this price??? We do take land vacations to an all inclusive resort in Mexico every other year or so. Our next cruise in December will probably cost us a bit more than that would but we get to see so much more! It's a no brainer.
CalaDragonflyLady Posted July 16, 2017 #228 Share Posted July 16, 2017 I never had kids, that's how I can afford decent vacations on my own  And no, I don't want to take you with me  lol
Rudyard Posted July 16, 2017 #229 Share Posted July 16, 2017 Haven't read through all 12 pages, so forgive me if this has already been said, but the easiest thing is to simply not tell people if you think t's going to be a problem. No one at work needs to know where I'm going on vacation. Most don't even know I'm going until after I get back. Almost the same for family. I'll let someone know I'm going so that they can contact me in case of an emergency, but that's it. The rest don't know until I'm back and handing out souvenirs, at which point they are grateful enough that they don't question my choice of vacation. gannk Posted July 16, 2017 #230 Share Posted July 16, 2017 We budget, save, and pay a little bit every month. I think this is actually easier than a traditional vacation. We already have (almost) everything paid for in advance, and don't have the huge credit card bill looming over us when we get home. CHOG-LIFE Posted July 16, 2017 #231 Share Posted July 16, 2017 Drugs and racketeering. That's my usual answer, followed by silence. Sometimes I mix it up and tell them I'm a bitcoin millionaire. simplelife Posted July 17, 2017 #232 Share Posted July 17, 2017 The "take me with you" response is different from the "how can you afford it" one. In the first case they are simply expressing the desire to cruise. I have be second case, they are being noses.
