nettergal Posted April 9, 2017 #1 Share Posted April 9, 2017 We were on the Sunshine last week and had an incredible experience- probably the best crew of any of our 10 cruises. Food was great, entertainment wonderful, a secret find was the steakhouse bar which was always empty and felt like our own private bar. We loved Natalya the bartender and her amazing martinis. A few problems but none that really affected us much. The chair hogs were bad especially on Serenity. If you didn't reserve a chair by 7 am you were out of luck for the day. Also found the casino more smokey than we have noticed in the past. We had an aft wrap for the first time and I don't know how I'll ever cruise without one again :) The only issue was a terrible garbage odor at different times most noticeable from the side of our balcony. This seemed worse when we were in port- our cabin was deck 7 starboard which makes me wonder if the garbage/ trash storage was below us. If so I guess the trick is to only get a port side aft wrap. Just wondering if anyone else has ever noticed this problem? Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app
Rare shof515 Posted April 9, 2017 #2 Share Posted April 9, 2017 depending on the port,in some ports they unload the garbage. There might be some garbage trucks nearby or there were staging the garbage on the dock for pick up.
chengkp75 Posted April 9, 2017 #3 Share Posted April 9, 2017 All food waste is kept in refrigerated walk-ins to keep it from rotting and smelling until it can be either ground up and pumped over at sea or disposed of on shore. It may be that while in port, with no "apparent wind" (caused by the ship's movement), and with either little actual wind, or with a slight wind from astern, that the odors from the sewage tank vents, which exhaust high up in the funnels, was being blown down over the after part of the ship. Some times, folks let food items get washed down the balcony drains, and due to the nature of these drains, which go out of the ship below the waterline, there is always water trapped in the bottom of the drain. This food waste is then held on top of this water, and when it starts rotting it will send the aroma back up the drain pipes. Since these are exterior drain pipes, there are no traps like sanitary drains to keep odors from backing up.
nettergal Posted April 12, 2017 Author #4 Share Posted April 12, 2017 Thanks for the info. We had never had this problem before- sounds like it was a fluke. Counting down to the next cruise! Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app
Rare mizLORInj Posted April 12, 2017 #5 Share Posted April 12, 2017 We had deck 6 aft wrap starboard last September and I don't recall smelling garbage at all.
