Herbi Posted April 27, 2017 #1 Share Posted April 27, 2017 On my first ever cruise (Carnival Glory, June 2018) I'll be stopping in Roatan. What shouldn't I miss? The plan at the moment is to do a BOSS scooter excursion through CCL as it doesn't seem to be available privately, then just explore the island at our leisure for a couple of hours. Is this a good way to spend time? What could I do for the remaining time?
ABQrobin Posted April 27, 2017 #2 Share Posted April 27, 2017 Roatan is a beautiful island, but you can't really "explore" the island on your own. It has very few roads, lots of dense jungle, and small towns spread out from end to end. Your best bet is to pick an area, like West end, and stay there to explore that. It is tourist area, so lots of little shops and restaurants. And also, it is important to realize that Roatan is part of Honduras, which is a 3rd world country. People live in little plywood shacks in poverty. Tourism is the only industry bringing jobs and money to the island. It is a scuba diving paradise, as well as snorkeling and beach activities. Cruise ships now bring money to the island. If people seem to be pushy with buying their handmade crafts, there is a reason...
Rare crewsweeper Posted April 27, 2017 #3 Share Posted April 27, 2017 or take an island tour with one of the private vendors. And if you like snorkeling, do a snorkeling excursion West Bay with the crowds or a private resort in other spots.
OCruisers Posted April 27, 2017 #4 Share Posted April 27, 2017 Noticed you'll be on a Carnival ship. If you aren't into snorkeling, the Mahogany Bay beach (free) is within the cruise port complex. It would be an easy thing to do after you BOSS excursion. :)
