jeanine Posted May 7, 2017 #1 Share Posted May 7, 2017 Our cruise begins in Rome, have been researching the countryside not too far from the port. Has anyone visited the area of Viterbo? Doesn't look too far by car. Thank you
Rare Hlitner Posted May 7, 2017 #2 Share Posted May 7, 2017 We have driven through Viterbo a few times and it seems like an ok city...which is not generally on most tourist itineraries. There used to be a frequent contributor here on CC who lived in Viterbo (she is an American expat) but we have not seen her posting here for a couple of years. If you are looking for a town to spend a night pre cruise...it would be fine. There are probably a few decent "Argritourismo's" in the surrounding region which might be something worth exploring...if you looking for a different kind of place to spend a night. iancal Posted May 13, 2017 #3 Share Posted May 13, 2017 We stayed at a wonderful Agritourism just outside Orvieta. We have toured the area by car several times. We preferred Orvieta to Viterbo (about 40 K between them both). Lots of interesting places to tour in that area. We highly recommend getting out and doing some independent touring on your own. The fun part can be getting lost or ending up at a local tratoria where no one speaks English and the them menu is in Italian. Huge differences between casually touring in Tuscany and Umbria vs Rome, or ships excursions to various areas.
