A. They are going to Cozumel which isn't the same as going to the heart of Mexico. B. A tour operator provided lunch will be properly sourced and food cleaned. Yes; I would do as you are suggested if ordering from a food stand outside the tourist areas in Mexico, but the food in Cozumel will be fine. Tourists eat it every day.

I've had food provided by tour operators in Mexico, Belize, Tanzania, and all over the Caribbean; never worried and never had an issue. They depend on their reviews and making tourists sick would tank their business.

Just because you have never become ill does not mean everything is safe to eat. Relying on the fact that their business is still in business and assuming it makes then food safe is ludicrous. That's like saying its safe to jump off the roof because I did it and didn't get hurt.

The safety rules I laid out are absolutely what should be followed by any tourist. Any physician or infectious disease specialist will tell you the same. You should always exercise prudence and caution.

I don't think I am any more likely to get food poisoning from food provided by a reputable company in Cozumel than by a reputable company in the US. And I refuse to live in fear when I travel. Sensible precautions are fine; but ur precautions go too far for me. No reason to cause cautious travelers unreasonable anxiety.

You should feel free to do as you please and live with the consequences. However, I am also free to state my opinion on the matter. Furthermore, if you read my response it really has nothing to do with food poisoning. It has more to do with parasites and bacteria that are indigenous to the region and to which the locals have become accustom, but can cause tourists extreme physical distress. The precautions I mentioned not only make sense, are recommended by any physician, but are directly relevant to that problem. It has nothing whatever to do with cleanliness

Unfortunately, your opinions tend to be stated as imperatives, with no allowance for alternative perspectives or approaches. In this particular case, I agree with your advice with with respect to which foods to avoid, but like countless other seasoned, adult travellers, I've made exceptions when I've deemed it safe to do so and have suffered no repercussions.

Perhaps you have a point. Although I don't think imperative is the word you were looking for. I am in some respects a victim of my profession and I forget that casual conversation, especially in writing, is subject to arbitrary interpretation of "tone". However, to your point perhaps I can remember to preface my statements with "in my opinion".

I absolutely expect and respect differing opinions. However, I will respond if I think I have not articulated well and my point is being missed, or if I disagree with a response, especially if someone challenges my right to express my opinion. It's silly to accuse me of scaring other travelers because someone doesn't agree with me. We are all here adults and capable of making up our own minds, as long as we are equipped with the facts. That's the very nature of free will.
