onespots Posted June 4, 2017 #1 Share Posted June 4, 2017 Interested in some ideas for spending our time in Auckland. We are 4 adults from 40-65 years old in good walking shape & no mobility issues. We arrive on the Celebrity Solstice Saturday December 9 2017. We have a 3:20 pm flight from Auckland to Los Angles. Since we will be off the ship early, looking for ideas to explore this area prior to going to the airport. Seems we have a 4 hour window to explore. Your ideas & suggestions are most appreciated. Thanks John
Korimako Posted June 4, 2017 #2 Share Posted June 4, 2017 Is 3.20 the flight departure time or the time you need to be at the airport for an international flight? If the flight is at 3.20 you need to be at the airport by 1.20 if not 12.
onespots Posted June 5, 2017 Author #3 Share Posted June 5, 2017 Flight is scheduled for a 3:20 pm departure. Aware 3 hours is the normal time to allow for international flights. Thank you for reminding me. John
Globaliser Posted June 5, 2017 #4 Share Posted June 5, 2017 Since we will be off the ship early ...What time is "early"? What is your plan for your bags while you're exploring Auckland? And how are you planning to get to the airport? On the basis that you're likely to be planning to get to the airport for about 1.00 pm, and that you might need to allow an hour to get there (to include some margin for unexpected problems), that means that you'll be wanting to leave central Auckland by about midday. Between getting off the ship, finding luggage storage, and retrieving your luggage before heading off for the airport, I'd be surprised if you had as much as four hours of actual exploring. MrYellowDuck Posted June 10, 2017 #5 Share Posted June 10, 2017 It shouldn't take more than 30 mins to drive to the airport from the city but as has been suggested I'd allow an hour. By the time you arrive the new section of motorway will be open and so give a second route meaning that it's very unlikely you'll have a major problem getting to the airport. With luggage for four you'll need two taxis or a shuttle. Assuming that you don't want to take the airport bus (which leaves from need where your ship will berth). The war memorial museum is not too far away (but it is beyond sensible walking distance) and there's a reasonable collection of NZ themed things to see. You could pop over to Devenport taking the ferry (from near where you will be) - there are restaurants for brunch and shops etc. The zoo is pretty good and perhaps 15 mins away by car. Kelly Talkton's is an aquarium with free transport from near where you will be - it's an "okay" experience but nothing special and not as good as the more major aquariums you may have encountered elsewhere. You could pop up to SkyCity and do some of the activities around the tower. Doing scenery will need more time.
SeeSun&Sea Posted June 16, 2017 #6 Share Posted June 16, 2017 The Hop-on/Hop-off bus stops at the cruise wharf. Not sure what their luggage policy is. http://www.explorerbus.co.nz/
onespots Posted June 17, 2017 Author #7 Share Posted June 17, 2017 Hello Everyone Thanks for this information & suggestions during our short time in Auckland. This will certainly help us plan our time accordingly. Anything is better than sitting around the airport for hours waiting for your departure. Appreciate your responses. John If you are in town for only a few hours before heading off to the airport how about exploring the Viaduct and Wynyard part of town - full of restaurants and bars and places to sit and watch the waterfront go by and only a few minutes walk with your bags form the ship,...
