Ok, so here's an idea....the kids are old enough to do 'crafty' things.....how about getting them together and beading something they can wear on the cruise? It'll be fun and get them excited about the cruise!

 

As others have said, you can go to Guest Services once you board and they will gladly punch a hole in them.

Make sure that the lanyards are break away. It could really be a tragedy if they aren't.

 

I am alway leery of children wearing something around their neck that could become a noose or choking hazard.

 

If the card gets lost it can be very easily replaced.

 

You may also consider getting a stretchable wrist band with a pocket to hold the card. I have one that was purchased from Eddie Bauer that can be used for a phone and etc. it also has a zipper pocket. I wear it hold my card and some cash when going ashore. It is made by Sprigs. Eddie Bauer had them on sale for less that $10 in their gadget section.

 

It may be a more of an initial expense but I am sure that it would be more useful during the cruise and when it is over.

The breakaway part is invaluable. When you hand your card to a server you will always know it is YOUR card that you are getting back, because of the attachment to the breakaway part. Once on a cruise, the server had multiple cards to return and I was given someone elses. I didn't realize it until I went back to my cabin and could not get in the room! Guest Relations took care of rescinding the charges the person who got mine back had made and all was well with the world. :)

That is a nice feature but not the breakaway that I am referring to. You need a cord that is easily broken away from the neck if the cord gets hung up on something.

We've always made the lanyard with a clip at the end for easy removal of the card to give to whomever. My sister made a small string of beads that she attached to the hole in the card for just that purpose! It's pretty!

I agree with Miched about the safety issue and would NOT put one on a small child...but OP has kiddies aged 7 and up and I don't see them getting into trouble with them.

 

Gimlet Gal...I LOVE the breakaway clip and will look for one on my next cruise....I'm sure there will be a gazillion of them on board!!! I bought my first one on our first cruise and I love having it around my neck...I'm a "hands free" person with a nasty habit of losing things or forgetting where I put them so I would be able to easily find them again! I even wear it off the ship but keep it tucked inside my shirt, because it has emergency numbers on it..I'm not concerned about being identified as a tourist since I have learned that we stand out like skunks at a picnic no matter what we're wearing.

Thank you for all of the input and ideas. I'm mostly concerned with the 12 yo as they will have some freedom and will need their cards. The little ones (entering 3rd grade) likely won't need theirs all the time.

If they are 12 yo, they might not want to wear a lanyard as it is not exactly cool swag

Unlikely that the 12yo will be willing to wear lanyards. Considered "old lady" or "baby".

At that age, they prefer a wrist band that has a ring and the hole punched card can be put on the ring. Here's a link to what I am describing (available anywhere they make keys, like Homedepot or the hardware store)

I personally wear a lanyard, but I have one that that the card can be removed for convneince, and has a small zippered pocket attached. This way I can have my credit card and cash (for the casino!) and driver's license for going into port. No need to carry a purse. (Also available through Amazon)

We don't usually have lanyards tbh.. but this year our 11 year old is allowed to hang on to her own card for the first time . She's getting a purple bling lanyard before we sail as that in her words ' will look cool '

Each child , is obviously different [emoji23]
