We are going on our 1st trip to Alaska visiting Icy Strait,Juneau & Ketchikan in early September. I would like to see whales diving so tails are visible. my wife wants to see bears (brown or black). Out of the 3 ports, where are our "best chances" to please us both. Many thanks.

Icy Strait Point is probably your best chance for both in one port. Most ships offer a bear / whale watching combo.

I also highly recommend one of the small boat (6 passengers) out of Icy Strait Point. We used Glacier Wind and had a great experience.

There may be independent bear watching excursions as well. We were there in May, which was a little early for prime bears watching.

Based on my research, You may be too late for bears - You'll have to ask the independent operators if they will take you where it is "possible" (Seeing bears is my main goal for my trip, so I booked a late July cruise.)

Icy Strait Point & Juneau both offer whale watch excursions.

My main point of reference when looking into bears was:

If your wife wants to see bear, here is the place, and she doesn't have to leave hre computer. The bears come and go. At this moment, the stream is empty of them. But most of the day there are plenty to be seen. The cam is live and at Brooks falls/camp at Katmai National Park & Preserve, AK. Remember this is live, and the bears are in nature, so you can see all most anything in bear behavior.

I like this one better. I just sent it to my four grand kids so they can get a head start on the feeding frenzy. Thanks for the link.

Bears are possible out of Hoonah and Ketchikan. YES there are independent tours.

Humpbacks are seen 100% of the trips out of Hoonah and Juneau. BUT- IF indeed a priority- 1 time isn't going to cut it, frankly- I'd do both and double my opportunities due to my wildlife priority. Never would I consider not taking advantage of an opportunity if I weren't a frequent visitor.
