I know in Mobile the Fantasy is towed out when it departs. I would presume this is due to the Mobile River not being wide enough to have a true turning basin, and not wanting to move the ship astern all the way from its berth to the mouth of the Mobile River.

 

It looks like channel around Galveston's port is also pretty narrow.
