catwoman6226 Posted October 5, 2017 #26 Share Posted October 5, 2017 Weggs - we did the L.A. to Hawaii trip on the Star this past Feb/March and had a fantastic time We were also in a handicapped accessible room - although we were in a balcony - I'm sorry you weren't able to find one for your cruise! Our beds were just fine - our steward had put some sort of topper on them before we even arrived - looked like a comforter folded in half. I was concerned before the trip, after seeing many negative comments about the Star's condition, but we were very pleasantly surprised. Sure there were some bathroom tiles that needed replacing/grout work but overall, particularly in the public areas, we thought the ship was in excellent shape. I hope you are able to go (I also was concerned that my oncologist wouldn't let me go) and that you have a wonderful trip and make many happy memories. Astro Flyer Posted October 5, 2017 #27 Share Posted October 5, 2017 It appears that that website has not been updated since mid April of this year. Thanks although within the past couple of months they've added another line for the Sapphire's March 2018 drydock changing the location to Singapore. runnerodb83 Posted October 5, 2017 #28 Share Posted October 5, 2017 I'm the webmaster on the site and try to update it regularly when I find new information. I will be sailing on the voyage after the drydock and will get some photos of improvements. Based on the information I've seen, the Star will not receive the Ocean Medallion technology. As far as the original Grand Class ships (Grand, Golden, Star), only the Golden will receive this and will then transfer to P&O Australia in 2020 after a season or two in the northern hemisphere. I'm always open to suggestions for website improvements which are of course limited by my time and dayjob.

It is possible future conversions will occur after mid year 2019. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

runnerodb83 Posted October 5, 2017 #32 Share Posted October 5, 2017 My goal on the next Star voyage is to take some 360 photos of various public areas with updates - just trying to figure out how to get some of the last ones I took on the website. I'm also in the process of making a master table with nearly any ship attribute you can think of so users can sort and filter by ship. I've got everything in there from which ships have which dining options down to how many passengers per elevator. Glad you all enjoy the site. Kartgv Posted October 5, 2017 #33 Share Posted October 5, 2017 Wow, now I am worried....we are probably taking our last cruise because of my husband health (his oncologist may tell us he can't go) and we've booked the Star HI trip October 25th. We've loved the HI trips in the past and this summer we enjoyed immensely the new Princess beds, on our trip to Alaska so we're disappointed they wouldn't be on the Star yet. The only handicapped room we could get was an inside and have done OK in them in the past, but wished we could have found a balcony one this time. That's what you get for booking late. Please give me some "good news" about our upcoming trip. I trust the Adult Spa pool will be open and functioning???? Don't worry - the reports of very pool conditions on the Star are very exaggerated. We're currently onboard (12 days so far including 8 sea days, so plenty of time to look around), heading back to Vancouver from Hawaii and have enjoyed the ship very much. Yes, some of the furniture is a little worn, but we've had not even one 'unstable' or broken chair anywhere, the ship is clean, the staff is friendly and helpful, elevators & all other facilities have been in the usual working order. Yes, the Adult Spa pool is open and functioning. We're not crazy about the entertainment except for Elua, but other than that have no complaints whatsoever. If someone wanted to walk around looking for problems, they could probably find them, but we'd rather focus on relaxing and enjoying ourselves. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I'm sure Princess will be taking care of business during the refurb coming up in a week and a half.;) I'm looking forward to doing your itinerary with LAX being our home port next year!:D
trophy_23 Posted November 25, 2017 #36 Share Posted November 25, 2017 Just to add an update for everyone, we came off the Star (10day Pacific Coastal) Oct 18 and found the ship to be in good shape. It could use some TLC in areas and some upgrades, but was far from being in poor shape. They replaced all of the mattresses on the ship during our first port (LA/San Pedro), which was a good thing because the mattress was horrible! Nice and comfy after that though for the remainder of our cruise. The crew was hard at work painting and varnishing at every opportunity. Some electrical work and new light fixtures were also being installed in public spaces during our cruise. This was our first time on Princess and enjoyed the ship and all it had to offer. Tiggerontheseas Posted November 26, 2017 #37 Share Posted November 26, 2017 I was on the 4/21/17 Hawaii Cruise on the Star and unfortunately it was one of my least favorite cruises ever (68 cruises & counting). The Star is OLD! Let me repeat the Star is OLD. The worst areas? The fitness center and Casino. The casino was such a sad, lifeless area. It's pretty large space, but for some reason all of the machines are pushed up against the walls. The ship obviously hasn't been touched for years. We had a mini-suite and it was old looking and in disrepair. The Solarium pool area was always cold - they never heated the space. So during the crossing from Vancouver to the Hawaiian Islands my guess the temperatures was in the low to mid 60's Fahrenheit. kids were in the pool but adults had winter down coats on! The buffet area is annoying. They never improved on the original design of the space, so they use ropes to manage the traffic so you can only enter the main food area from one direction and exit from another. You compare that ship with Celebrity's Millennium Class ships which were built the same time and you will see Princess really let that ship go. Hi there! We were on the same cruise. :) I agree that the Horizon Court set up is terrible! And the bed in our stateroom was worse than awful. Mega awful? LOL. Other than that I thought the ship was in pretty good shape - much better than the shape the Grand was in when we sailed on her in 2014. The crew was amazing and the entertainment for the entire cruise was fantastic. I even enjoyed the cruise director and that is a position that is normally staffed by people that are much too over the top for my taste. I guess I need a few less bubbles and Andrew was great. SuzyL Posted November 26, 2017 #38 Share Posted November 26, 2017 Our Hawaii cruise last February was my favorite. Granted, I've only been on 8 (4 Princess/4 Royal) so I don't have the experience a lot of people have with ships. I've been on pretty new ones (Liberty and Emerald), fairly older ones (Rhapsody and Golden) and those in between. I guess I didn't much notice if it was showing its age because I was so relaxed and happy with the service and the atmosphere on board. I loved being able to walk around the whole ship (Deck 4?) and I loved Skywalkers for views. I'm kind of sad it's going into drydock but as long as they don't take away Skywalkers, I'll get over it. :)

sunneesmile Posted November 30, 2017 #46 Share Posted November 30, 2017 Just got off the Star. Our room had a new mattress a mini on E deck. We did the Ultimate Ship Tour and we were told the ship would be finishing the new mattresses in every room during dry dock. They had availability of some and replaced the worst ones while back. Also the carpeting in most of the cabin hallways will be replaced. Alot of extensive tech will be upgraded, including some things in the engine control and bridge areas, and the tech for medallion will be added, but the service will not be rolled out until sometime in 2019. They are testing the Medallion service on the current ships with it, and are looking at feedback. Upgrades to laundry, and galley equipment, repairs and some replacements in propulsion, upgrades to elevators. Refurb to many cabins. Bathtubs in mini suites will be replaced. There was alot more mentioned as well. It sounds like the Star will look very nice for its itins in Dec!

I'm glad the beds will have been replaced by the time we sail again this coming March. We were very happy with the ship and had a great time, but the bed wasn't good. We sailed on the CB for 27 days in Sept./Oct., and we loved the new beds.
Pam in CA Posted December 1, 2017 #48 Share Posted December 1, 2017 I was also just on the Star and new bedding was delivered to the cabins for after the dry dock. She is seriously in need of repair in many places. I usually don’t comment about a ship looking “tired” but the wood steps to the Lotus Pool were literally falling apart and the handrail in one of the elevators fell off and had to be reattached to name a couple of things. The hair dryer at the desk in my cabin was literally ripped off the wall with the wires hanging out. They gave me a tiny travel hair dryer about the size of the note pad until I complained. Only then did they give me an actual dryer a couple of days into the cruise.
Rare LawDog61 Posted December 1, 2017 #49 Share Posted December 1, 2017 Sorry to hear from Pam that the Star is in such "need". Hopefully the dry dock will bring her back to life.Star is my favorite Princess ship. I will be on her shortly after dry dock (Jan 18) and will report back.
