savannah2117 Posted August 14, 2017 #1 Share Posted August 14, 2017 We are interested in staying at a bed and breakfast in Girdwood after the cruise and wondering if there would be either a taxi, transportation company, Uber, some type of reasonable transportation to get us to Girwood. It looks like Avis does a rental car for about $100 per day and a $150 one way drop off fee. That's pretty steep! Any suggestions?
AKStafford Posted August 14, 2017 #2 Share Posted August 14, 2017 A rental car is going to be the most convenient. Since your trip is next year, I think you'll find if you make the reservation in October that rates will be lower than what you've estimated. Budget Queen Posted August 14, 2017 #3 Share Posted August 14, 2017 Frankly a car is needed, and unless you back track- which also adds costs of valuable time it may not be a good option, compared to the high cost one way rental. How much time do you have? And are you FIRM on your choice. An option that was available in the past- is doing a Prince William Sound boat tour with their transportation which did make a stop in Girdwood. BUT be very certain that not having a car there is what you want? A lot is not going to be walkable.
savannah2117 Posted September 5, 2017 Author #4 Share Posted September 5, 2017 thanks, good to know. Is October the best time to book a car?
mapleleaves Posted September 5, 2017 #5 Share Posted September 5, 2017 (edited) Weigh the time and cost of your options to see which one best meets your needs. A one-way rental is pricey but an efficient use of your time---- pick up a car at the harbor, drive thru the tunnel and go directly to girdwood, arriving by 10. Or take the bus to Anchorage for $35pp, arriving at the airport around 10:30am, pick up a rental car for $35 a day, then a 1 hr drive back to Girdwood. Arriving around 12:30. So $250 vs $100, but you lose 2 1/2 hrs...... p.s. the avis office in whittier closes in a week or so. Budget Queen Posted September 5, 2017 #6 Share Posted September 5, 2017 I'd also look at Mat Su touring options. Is there a specific reason you have chosen Girdwood? Already have your touring plans? There are numerous possibilities, so I'd suggest perhaps, doing a wide detailed search of what is available. An example with a late departure day 2, a Seward visit is possible? Or a Matansuka Glacier Trekking, inclusion. :) As for rentals- you'll have to check when they open up, then simply recheck for price drops, no magic date for lowest price. This past season, as example, had later drips that were more favorable rates than the early bookings.
