Hawaii- Casino Open?

No casino while you're cruising Hawaiian Islands.

The OP is not doing the normal Hawaiian Islands cruise. The POA does not even have a casino. This cruise is on the Jewel from Vancouver.

The POA does not even have a casino, so it does not matter where that ship is.

No idea if it will open once the Jewel is outside the 12 mile limit and if this treated different because it is not based in Hawaii.

If this were the POA, which is USA flagged, then you would be correct, but I'm not sure this applies to the foriegn flagged Jewel, sailing in Hawaii waters.

If I'm not mistaken, other cruiselines, all foriegn flagged, which sail from the US mainland to Hawaii, are allowed to use their casinos in Hawaiian waters. Perhaps closed when docked in port, but opening between the islands. Pretty sure I have seen this in trip reports of other cruiselines doing similar itinerary.

Correct, I did the Vancouver-Hawaii last year on the Carnival Legend and the casino was open while we were sailing at the islands. It was closed the last night because they had to convert everything to AUS$. Not sure where the Jewel goes after, but they may do the same thing.

It will be closed in port as it is in all ports but is likely to be open while cruising between ports. As NCL has not done a cruise like yours previously no one knows exactly what will happen.

While the casino will be closed while in port in Hawaii, cruise ship casinos are not closed in all ports. When docked in Bermuda, ships' casinos are permitted to be open from 9 pm to 3 am . Most ships calling on Bermuda are docked there for one to three nights so casinos are in operation on most ships making regular port calls in Bermuda.

Another port where docked ships' casinos can open if in port past a certain hour ( about 6 or 7 pm as I recall) is Nassau, Bahamas. Some ships overnight there and some will stay in port until late evening, so it's fairly common for a ship's casino to be open in Nassau.

  • 2 weeks later...

We sailed from Vancouver to Hawaii a few years ago and the casino was open the same hours as any other cruise we have been on. I was surprised cos I had sailed around the islands before and there was no casino on board and I know there is no gambling or lottery in Hawaii at all so I assumed it would be closed .... but it was business as usual. BTW if you need a shuttle to the ship or airport checkout Hawaii23, its a private shuttle $23 for 2 people, $7 for each extra person
