mlmbar Posted September 28, 2017 #126 Share Posted September 28, 2017 The logic of RCL picking up a ship full of people today who want desperately to leave the area in light of conditions on the ground, and yet not canceling more than a week's sailings is lost on me. Reading today's news, from multiple sources, it seems that relief has started arriving in San Juan but thus far, has mostly only made it to the pier, since the ability to distribute things has been hampered by the crumbling infrastructure. We are all human beings. We are capable of having more than one thought at a time and so while we all hope that PR recovers with miraculous speed, we can also hope that we are not required to be put in the middle of what might be a very unpleasant and challenging environment. Racer70 Posted September 28, 2017 #127 Share Posted September 28, 2017 The police and military are now having to keep the peace in Puerto Rico, is it truly safe to add cruise ship passengers to the mix? Simple answer is no. Allegedly, passengers arriving for the 10/7 sailing will be boarded on buses courtesy of RCI and "police escorted" directly to the cruise port. I also heard that the crew of the AOS are not permitted off the ship while she sits in port due to safety concerns.

Why would RCI want to bring so many people into an already devastated place? I think you have more irate passengers that want them to just cancel the cruise than not to cancel. These people in PR need help. They don't need the added security to protect cruise passengers. Cancel the cruises for the rest of the month or move them to another embarkation port. I just don't get it.

PR governor has every right to overrule RCI, but has chosen not to. I'm not taking sides, just pointing out the economic impact of canceling cruises is something PR government is not willing to take? I don't think the governor has voiced an opinion, besides issuing a night-time curfew. The decision to move ahead or not on the cruise would be RCL's. Beware, I suggested that they cancel at least until the end of October and I was harshly criticized and called selfish on the fb C&A page . I was also told by my meet and mingle that my negative comments were not welcome while they all happily made plans for the cruise. If they are reading this it is ok. I was totally embarrassed by the rebuke as well as surprised when I was just trying to be realistic Sent from my iPhone using Forums
saltydoge Posted September 28, 2017 #133 Share Posted September 28, 2017 Royal & Celebrity are leaving their customers twisting in the wind until the last minute so they can keep our money, plain and simple. They know it's a disaster area and not fit for tourists. I'll be they're just holding onto the money to make the accounting books look good at the end of the third quarter, which if true is a huge disservice to all of us. The airports don't have a working radar and the power grid is destroyed. Parts of San Juan, especially Ocean Park, are still flooded. Half the hotels are canceling reservations. Stop letting the accountants call the shots and cancel the sailings!

If commercial planes aren't allowed into the island the many passengers stranded will have very few options to get out. Carnival has only canceled thru October 8th. I know you are convinced RCI and Carnival are only out for the money so your narrative is all that counts.
Darcy03231 Posted September 28, 2017 #135 Share Posted September 28, 2017 I'm glad I'm on the 10/28 sailing. Hopefully things will improve by then. I'd be very nervous if I were on the 10/7 sailing. If our cruise goes forward as planned and conditions in Puerto Rico are still the same I'm seriously considering meeting up with the ship at its first port of call. Seems unlikely since before the hurricane they didn’t have that volume and they are still not accepting international flights and many flights from the US are shown as canceled. Schplinky Posted September 28, 2017 #139 Share Posted September 28, 2017 The reality is that RCL is the only travel provider making people squirm week by week. Hotel chains? Change fees waived. That's what was being reported in the NYT on Tuesday. It's even more today, and yes they are not all commercial. I'm only responding to the post that said the airport was shut down. It's been open for three days. It's certainly not perfect, but there are a lot of people trying to get out. Please believe me I'm not trying to make a case either way. philly22 Posted September 28, 2017 #142 Share Posted September 28, 2017 THE issue is. about San Juan barely survie, and Rcl wants to cruise out San Juan ,You have people that are flying in a day before fro cruise from USA. Change the port from San Juan or just cancel. The people of San Juan are struggle as is .They don't need to see people coming in and going on a cruise. Rcl do the right thing . FLACRUISER99 Posted September 28, 2017 #145 Share Posted September 28, 2017 RCI is giving free transfers and allowing folks to check in October 6 for the October 7 A0S Cruise. This is due to hotels being closed. Do if you're flying in a day early you will you will have a place to stay. S.S.Oceanlover Posted September 28, 2017 #146 Share Posted September 28, 2017 I'll be surprised if this cruise is a go there should be minimal deterrents to make RCI cancel this cruise. More flights are coming in. People flying in the day before are being allowed to stay on the ship since most of the hotels are not opened yet and RCI is offering free transportation from the airport. If more hotels don't open before the October 14th cruise it may be a little dicey with some pax flying in the day before as there won't be a ship to put those pax up for the night. ShoesShirtsandSand Posted September 28, 2017 #148 Share Posted September 28, 2017 Here's a link from the Puerto Rico Tourism Board - last updated today (9/28) @ 6:23pm Eastern, while all info is subject to change, they are on the ground and would presume to have the latest and greatest info. Also, towards the bottom on the page, there's a phone number for ppl to call if they have questions as well as a live chat link. No hours listed, but it's something. http://puertoriconow.seepuertorico.com/ Side note, as Adventure did dock today, I was looking on Marine Traffic, and it appeared they were docking at Old San Juan, not Pan American. Was that me (totally possible) or is that a little strange (for a Ship, with it's own dedicated terminal, to be using someone else's terminal, that per Carnival, needs repairs?) ..
