Cruise Port Question

On European River Cruises, do the ships sometime drop you off in one port such as Cologne and then after your excursion pick you up in a different city such as Bonn or Koblenz (transporting you to the new city by way of the excursion transportation)

I believe this happens at times so that the boat need not wait in line to pass through locks while passengers are on board, for example. Keeps the tour moving along.

That's happened on both of the river cruises I've taken. If passengers are touring on their own, they obviously need to be aware of this, and make their own arrangements to get to the next town or join the organized tour before it leaves.

It happened several times on our Viking Rhine Getaway last year. I was under the impression that it was a fairly common practice.
