Cigar Buyers Beware (La Triada selling fakes)

Just a reminder for those purchasing cigars in Havana to stay away from the La Triada Cigar and Coffee Shop (the cigar shop at the old fort where they have the worlds longest cigar). THEY SELL FAKES! The safe place to buy authentic cigars is at the Casa Del Habano in the Hotel Villenueava near the Havana Port.

Almost all places offering discounted cigars are selling fakes. The cigar industry is controlled by the government and the prices are set by the government (same with rum). We met many people on our cruise who reported "great deals" on their cigar purchases. There is no telling what they actually bought. Our guide (Blexie) warned us about the fake cigars and rum and showed us the places to find the real products.

I’m not a smoker but I want to get DS a couple cigars as a “gee my mom went to Cuba and all I got were these cigars” gift. Do I need a portable humidor or will they be okay in a baggie or plastic ware of some type?

They would be ok for a short time just in a baggie. I usually transport mine in a baggie with a humidifier pack. You can get them from amazon for a few bucks or at your local cigar shop.

This blog states they do take credit cards with just the 3% charge towards American $

 

Will try this first, if not available will have to go back the next day with a fish load of cash.

Just a heads up! I didn't find anyplace that took cards and they state on the boat that you can only use cash in Cuba. Also, if you would plan on getting cash from the ship at an ATM for second day if you couldn't use your card first day, *WARNING!* At least on our RCL ship, the Empress, when the casino closed the night before we arrived in port, they shut down the ATM until after leaving Cuba! Make sure you have your cash at least the night BEFORE you arrive in port!
