St Petersburg from the Breakaway

Hi all,

We are booked on the Breakaway next August for a trip round the Baltic sea:D we are trying to figure out St petersburg with our picky kids, who will be 16 and 9. We really want to look around the city and see the sites especially Peterhof fountains and gardens. A cruise around the canals would go down well with all of us, but as we are not culture vultures and the idea of spending hundrends of pounds to look around churches and museums makes us shivver, we still would like to experience the city but really didn;t know how complicated it would be to see St Peterburg when we booked the cruise:(

Any advice on best options would be greatly appreciated, have looked at all the top tour companies, but their costs and tours are not quite what we want and we are only really looking at doing 1 day in the city and the idea of having to wake at 'daft o'clock' to get breakfast and go through customs to meet a 7.30 tour is not what we call enjoying our holiday:o:o Has anyone done this city like this?

The only way to do St. Petersburg "independently" is to get a Russian visa. It really is easier to just take a tour, whether it be a ship's tour, or one from the multiple vendors that offer tours.

Get a private guide for your family. Recommend SPB tours.

I seem to recall a ships tour that just did Peterhof, but otherwise a private tour is the only way you'll get that sort of itinerary. Alla tours were great and offer private tours.

If you’re only going to do one day in town, do the second day.

The passport checks only take a long time the first time through so by the second day the lines will be much shorter.

My husband and I took our two boys, ages 15 & 16 did this cruise on the Getaway this past August. We opted to do a private tour so we had a bit more flexibility in the where we spent time while in St. Petersburg.

Took my kids (granted they are 21) last month on the Getaway. We booked a private tour with Best Guides. They were great at tailoring a personalized agenda.
