How can I go about ordering a birthday cake for a friend? I want them to bring it out at one of our specialty dinners.

If you're in the Haven or a suite, you could ask the concierge. If you're in any other cabin then it might be best to call or visit the restaurant in question and talk to them directly.

When you check in at the podium, tell the host/hostess it is your friend's birthday. The waiter will be told and at dessert a small cake will be presented while waiters sing Happy Birthday.

This, we just did this on the Gem in June. We actually just told our waiter when the birthday person went to the restroom. You can't choose or custom design a cake but what they bring out is fine.

Also FYI, this was at Cagney's, but I'm sure it would be the same at any restaurant.

Don't forget about ANNIVERSARY cakes - (its the same type of cake only the occasion is changed) !

 

Lots of ways to arrange the surprise - best done arranged in advance !

Be warned that if you call NCL to purchase a room decorating package - Birthday, Anniversary, Bon Voyage, etc - for a friend it WILL show up on their amenities list!! I tried to surprise our friends for their first cruise but they saw it the day before sailing.
