Rare kazu Posted January 4, 2018 #3 Share Posted January 4, 2018 There are so many wonderful things to see in Amsterdam, Museums, Red Light District, Anne Frank House, gardens, etc. If you do want to go to the Anne Frank House, do make your reservation on line or you will have a long wait. They open up 2 months before the date.
veryseasonedtraveler Posted January 4, 2018 Author #4 Share Posted January 4, 2018 Thanks for the local ideas. I am interested in the surrounding area. We would like to explore. Sent from my iPad using Forums
CJcruzer Posted January 4, 2018 #5 Share Posted January 4, 2018 We have taken the train for short day trips : Zaans Schanse one time and another time to Haarlem. Delft is also a nice day trip, but a bit longer of a train ride from Amsterdam, it is much closer to Rotterdam or even better, from the Hague. Stpatsirish Posted January 4, 2018 #6 Share Posted January 4, 2018 We did Zaandam Schanse and Leiden by train from Amsterdam. Very easy to do.
EeyoreFan1967 Posted January 4, 2018 #7 Share Posted January 4, 2018 Bruges, Belgium is a nice little town and only about an hour and 20 minutes from Amsterdam by train. I also recommend renting bikes for a ride out into the countryside to see the old wind mills. I think we rode north...?

SilvertoGold Posted January 4, 2018 #10 Share Posted January 4, 2018 Walk the canals and/or take a canal cruise, see the Bloemenmarkt (Flower Market), the Rijksmuseum. Or take the train to Rotterdam for a day. Enjoy!
drowelf Posted January 4, 2018 #11 Share Posted January 4, 2018 Many things to do in Amsterdam for a couple of days. Multiple good museums, (Van Gogh, Rijks, Hermitage), several less prestigest types (2 Sex Museums). If your into WW II stuff, there is a Dutch Resistance Museum, which is very good. Anne Frank House - as noted be sure to buy tickets online, gets around the long wait line. Site seeing along the canals either by foot or a canal boot tour. The zoo is not too bad, either. We've probably spent a least a couple of weeks in Amsterdam (pre/post cruise) and so fare we've never run out of new things to do and see. The Amsterdam Hermitage is great for that, as it always gets new exhibits every 6 months. Cheese! Just try a google of 'what to do in Amsterdam' and you be deluged with more information than you can deal with.
Cruizer Bill Posted January 5, 2018 #12 Share Posted January 5, 2018 Our favorite sites in Amsterdam are the Rijksmuseum (where the Dutch Masters paintings are), the canal boat ride, and riding trams and buses to see places like Haarlem and Volendam. Lots of good beer and food here.
ncgolferette Posted January 5, 2018 #13 Share Posted January 5, 2018 By accident I found information on the charming town of Giethoorn. There are excursions to it from Amsterdam. Here is a link to one tourist site. https://giethoorntourism.com/
