Hoho bus in Reykjavik

Depending on when your ship leaves, the allure of Iceland is the countryside. Consider arranging a tour. The Blue Lagoon is an easy half day trip and the restaurant there is a amazing.

If that doesn't work, Rey is a very easy city to walk around. We did family Viking portraits with Mink photography. So much fun, and we got awesome pictures out of it. The portraits were as good as any we've had done at home, but the photographer is also involved with Viking reenactments (think LARP) and was a costume consultant for GOT's. My picture of my teen dd scowling, surrounded by furs and holding a sword is priceless.

We are arriving early May to Reykjavik on Celebrity, the first day is a 1:00 arrival and leaves the next day at 3:00 PM. I prefer to use independent tours, any suggestions? Is Blue Lagoon a tour that picks up at Port? Any suggestions of a 4-6 hour independent tour that picks up and returns to the ship? Thank you.

Blue Lagoon has their own transport from the city that you can book on their website. Other agencies will take you there, too, along with added tours (and charges).

Other tour options depends on what you want to see. Golden Circle is the basic "first timer" tour. Usually runs 6-8 hours, depending on which tour you choose

HOHO bus comes to the port. A shuttle took us from the ship to the gift shop entrance. (It is also walkable in a few minutes.) The shop has a nice selection and outside the shop is where you would pick up your tour or the HOHO bus.

I'm not sure how people got from the port area into town. We were there 4 weeks ago and took the 8 hour Golden Circle Tour the first day, The second day we planned to take the HOHO bus and explore the city a little bit but another cruise ship arrived during the night so we stayed on board.

People who took the HOHO said it was good, but very crowded with long lines at the port and standing room only.

Reykjavik has a small port building that contains a small shop as well as a desk where one can book tours and get information or even arrange for transportation. The HoHo bus has its own bus stop about 100 yards from that building where they also sell tickets. Many go into town by sharing a taxi. On our last two visits (the past two years) we have simply rented our own car...which is pricey but a bargain compared to many tour prices. There is usually some kind of shuttle bus into town. For those of us who like to walk it is only about a 2 mile walk into town.

Everything is Iceland is expensive which seems to be the fallout out from their failed currency, taxes, etc.

As to the HoHo bus, we did use it on one of our trips but for us, it was just an expensive way to get into town. DW and both love to walk, so once in town using the HoHo would have been more trouble then it was worth. But the route does get you to other places such as their local shopping mall. The downside is that it may only run about once an hour. The HoHo can be very crowded (standing room only).

We had the same port schedule on our recent Celebrity Eclipse cruise, 1pm first day and 3pm departure second day in Reykjavik. On the second day in port, we booked the following tour of a Lava Tunnel ... we were picked up and returned to the port. Honestly, this tour was one of the highlights of our cruise:
