Traveling with a minor

Our daughters friend is wanting to cruise with us. I know you're supposed to get permission from both parents but what if they don't know where her mother is? I believe her father has papers showing he has sole custody. Would she be able to go without getting consent from her mother?

When my husband went with one of our daughters without me, I signed papers allowing it. My hubby said they never asked for them though. The custody papers should be enough. I would call up Carnival in advance to make sure.

get a note from him stating he is allowing you to take the child and can make medical decisions for him and he has sole custody. get it notarized.

 

its so rare when anyone is asked for it that it should be enough. if you are even asked, this should be enough.

When i was 17 I sailed my first cruise with my best friend's family. They did get a notarized letter allowing them medical powers & allowing them to take me out of the country. I know for sure my mother is the only one who went to the notary. My parents are married to this day, but I know only my mother signed. This was over 15 years ago, but the letter was presented and I sailed with no questions asked.

Exactly, since dad has sole custody. Medical proxy might be useful if there is an emergency as well.

 

 

Carnival usually doesn't care what paperwork you bring, the issue can get thorny if you don't have it when returning through US Customs. The added emphasis on stopping child kidnappings and trafficking causes USC&BP to be more vigilant when a minor with a different last name is traveling with an adult.

We are taking our son's friend with us and have the notarized letter and his passport.
