at risk of not reading all the suggestions and being old school.

(Not to be nasty) we used whiteboards hung on our cabin doors (outside). Leaving notes where we would be and vice versa. Cheap, easy. Warning though is if you have a cabin near the elevator banks kids like to doodle and have even played hide 'n seek and moved them to different cabin doors.

Your safest choice may be to get an internet plan for both phones. Activate WiFi calling and put both phones in Airplane mode and you should be able to call or text between anyone on the ship or at home without any charges. This way you won't have to worry about any unexpected charges.

This would incur your cellular providers international plan and cost like $15 a day.

When you call via WiFi with an app such as What’sApp, you do not incur any cellular international charges. The phone does not use cellular data with these apps. It transmits using the WiFi signal only. It works even if you have disabled the cellular data roaming or are on airplane mode. Another app is Facebook messenger. I have used it often to call family while traveling.
