Rare cruisemom42 Posted March 8, 2018 #2 Share Posted March 8, 2018 No real need for a tour here, especially with a short day. Most cruise ships dock in Souda port, which is near Chania but not close enough to walk. Some ships offer a shuttle (either free or a small charge) and there is also usually a local bus operating right from the port area as well. You'll be dropped off in front of the local market building in Chania, which is worth spending a few minutes in. Chania is a small but pretty town with a lovely harbor area and lighthouse. Most people enjoy just walking around, seeing the harbor, doing a little shopping, etc. There is a small but nice archaeological museum in a converted monastery that's worth peeking into, if that interests you. rdt10 Posted March 9, 2018 #4 Share Posted March 9, 2018 we are here for the morning only (7am to noon). any recommended tour providers or is this a stop best done on your own? Chania is easy to do on your own as Cruisemom said. You may have a problem with the shops not opening until 9am or later. We were there in October and took the bus from the port to the market, about 15 minute trip. I think the bus was 2-3 euro pp roundtrip. Arrived around 9am and some shops were open but many were not. All were open by 10. If you go through the market and exit on the opposite end you will be in the tourist area with many shops and restaurants. Work your way down to the old port which is very pretty. Chania has several shops selling leather goods, olive oil and things made from olive tree wood. The buses don't have a set schedule. They leave when they fill up. The return bus picks up at the intersection a little farther down from the market and across the street.
