China Air Pollution

Can anyone tell me from personal experience how the air pollution/smog was in China at this time of year and in which cities? I do know about the masks to obtain, but I'm still worried, due to asthma.

We travelled in May. Smog was really bad in Xian. Sunny in Shanghai and foggy but not necessarily smoggy in Beijing.

Just got back from China 5 days ago - HK no issues, Xi’an was a bit smoggy - Beijing very smoggy - could not see the sky at all for all four days we were there. We brought N95 mask with us (husband has asthma) but did not bother his asthma at all - did not wear the masks. Having said that I would bring the mask just in case, every one is different and just bc it didn’t irritate his lungs does not mean it would not irritate others.

We were in Beijing last March (2017) and in Guangzhou last October. Overall, still ok. We brought masks (N-95), but didn't use them. I think Beijing was very nice when we were there.

Our day at the Forbidden City. Again, skies weren't clear, but I don't think the pollution was that bad.

Ok, maybe we were in Beijing when pollution was lower.

It is a major problem in many of the larger mainland cities. Hong Kong and Macau are not included and are much better. If you listed the cities you want information about it would be better and you would get information. During the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games, the Government shut down many of the factories around the city before the games to reduce smog. during the games
