nacsivmw Posted April 1, 2018 #1 Share Posted April 1, 2018 We will be tendering in when we arrive in Lahaina, and the rental car company has instructed us to phone Budget rental when we get on the tender and they will then send a shuttle to bring us to the rental agency. Has anyone else done this? I’m wondering if we will have cell service on the tender? Verizon has told us that we will not have extra charges while we are in HI, but I was planning on keeping my phone in airplane mode until we arrived on shore. Advice appreciated! CruiserBruce Posted April 1, 2018 #2 Share Posted April 1, 2018 You will likely have coverage. You sound like you are not a US citizen with a US phone plan. Is that true? US phone plans cover in Hawaii...it is part of the US.
nacsivmw Posted April 1, 2018 Author #3 Share Posted April 1, 2018 Yes, US citizen with US phone plan, my cell carrier did say I would be covered, I just wasn’t sure if that coverage extended to being out on the water?

Cell coverage usually extends 5 to 10 miles offshore. The ship will turn off its tower about 5 miles from the pier.
Astro Flyer Posted April 2, 2018 #5 Share Posted April 2, 2018 (edited) Yes, US citizen with US phone plan, my cell carrier did say I would be covered, I just wasn’t sure if that coverage extended to being out on the water? As others have posted, you’ll have your cell phone coverage during the short tender ride into Lahaina. Your cell phone will display Verizon when having their signal. trish1c Posted April 2, 2018 #6 Share Posted April 2, 2018 No need to use airplane mode. You can get signal on the ship, no roaming charges. Hawaii is a state just like any other. On board coming into port you get signal. I did a lot of work aboard ship using my phone. No extra charges. It's not a foreign country.
