What are the chances of an upgrade?

We’re on Oceana in 8 weeks in an inside cabin on regular fare - our first time with P&O and first time in an inside cabin. What are the chances of an upgrade?

Hi...how long is a piece of string. You are in an inside cabin now....what type of upgrade are you thinking of....another inside but higher grade or from your inside to outside? I think if you do get an upgrade it will be more likely to another inside higher grade unless you have highest grade inside then it could be to an outside. But it seems to be in the " lap of the Gods" as to whether you get any sort of upgrade and possibly how the cruise is selling....if the sales of your cruise are low then they may want to free up cheaper priced cabins to attract new sales. But it is all ifs and maybes....no guarantees ...but you may be lucky and be given a really good upgrade

P. S. I have a cruise booked with them....we sail this coming Friday....I booked direct with P&O....select fare but haven't been given any sort of upgrade but in previous years I have booked late saver through a TA and been given a category upgrade....just can't tell

Tbh we meet so many cruisers who only book insides and therefore have more money for more cruises we thought we'd give it a go. We have been upgraded once before on MSC from outside to a balcony so fingers crossed - think this inside might be a bit cramped for us!!

If you think it might be cramped, why don't you contact P&O and ask for the price to upgrade yourselves. The price will be the same as the when you booked this cruise, not the current price of an outside/balcony.

P&O's policy is only to upgrade between descriptors i.e. inside to inside or outside to outside, unless there is a very special reason e.g significant birthday or anniversary. Sometimes this can be unwanted if you have booked near the lifts and you end up having to walk a distance or end up at the front or back. If your specific cabin is out of action for some reason then they will reallocate to any cabin that is available which may be higher,

I almost always book an inside and very occasionally a balcony. The worst value are the outside cabins where you get virtually nothing extra for the money.

 

In terms of size there isn't an awful lot of difference between an inside and balcony on P&O and the inside is perfectly acceptable for the use I need it for.

 

In addition a well located inside cabin will knock the spots off a poor balcony cabin and the significant price difference means more cruises.

 

So thanks to all those who book balconies and outsides who subsidise my holidays.

Personally I find the rest of the ship a much more enjoyable space to spend time.

Yup - morning cuppa on the balcony, reading after lunch, pre-dinner drink, room service meal, watching a film from the sofa. Sometimes it's nice to get away from it all, but we still met and socialised with lots of other cruisers.

Same for us! We spend quite a lot of time in the cabin especially on a sea day. Its nice to be able to get some fresh air in private and put my slippers on and feet up whilst having my afternoon tipple. I dont think it would be the same in an inside cabin and anyway I am a bit claustrophobic so it wouldnt suit me.

 

Also I dont have to worry about husband snoring when he nods off if he is in the cabin.[emoji42]

Zero chance of an upgrade from an inside to anything other than a perceived better inside. For our upcoming cruise on Azura this Friday we booked a guaranteed PE inside cabin on an early saver and have been allocated a PB grade which we are quite pleased about.

Depends how much time you spend in your cabin. We always have an inside. We sleep better as it's dark and we only sleep change and shower in our cabin.

 

As for an upgrade, be careful what you wish for. We were just upgraded to an inside supposedly 3 grades higher than we booked. So we booked D deck slightly forward of midships and they moved us without even asking us to A deck right under the Lido. No thanks. They moved us back when I complained as I had particularly asked for "no upgrade"

 

I once had reason to complain about something fairly major and we were upgraded to an Outside on our next cruise.

Our sole P&O upgrade was a balcony to a suite. On Cunard, until very recently, all but two of our voyages had been upgraded.

Sorry to argue but on Arcadia 18 months ago we got an upgrade from an inside to a deluxe balcony. I assumed at the time this was because it was the North Sea in November and the more expensive balconies just weren't selling.....

Yes true - ours is only a week with 2 sea days; we’ll be on deck catching rays all day, hopefully, so only in cabin for shower/change/sleep

I thought the flat screen tv we had on Arcadia was more than adequate for the size of the cabin, although we are not one of those people who have a massive 73" [or whatever!] tv at home.

In 27 cruises on P&O, we have been offered upgrades twice, but there was a nominal charge of £50 each time, from memory it was from a large interior to a sea view, and from a standard balcony to a deluxe balcony. It was sometime in the early part of this century, and I think things are a bit different now days, there is often a 'no vacancies' at reception!
