CynthiaRI Posted April 5, 2018 #1 Share Posted April 5, 2018 We will be traveling on a back to back TA cruise this summer. I would love to hear from people who have taken a shore excursion through Cunard while in Southampton. We are thinking of going to Windsor or Winchester. Has anyone done either of these tours? Thanks!
Lanky Lad Posted April 5, 2018 #2 Share Posted April 5, 2018 I have not done the the Windsor trip, but I know someone who has and he enjoyed it. It's quite a long way so a lot of traveling on the motorway (freeway). If you go to Winchester I would not bother with a Cunard trip as it's only a short train ride from Southampton. bluemarble Posted April 5, 2018 #3 Share Posted April 5, 2018 We did the Cunard shore excursion to Winchester during a round-trip crossing from New York in 2016 and we enjoyed it. The coach for the excursion from Southampton dropped us off in Winchester along the street between the Guildhall and the Alfred the Great statue. For the first hour or so in Winchester, our guide escorted us along the short walk to the cathedral and led us on a guided tour through the very impressive cathedral itself. If you happen to be a Jane Austen fan, her grave site is within the cathedral and is included in the tour. After that, we were given about 1.5 hours to explore Winchester on our own at our own pace before returning to the coach for the trip back to Southampton. If you are looking for a half-day excursion rather than a full-day excursion, one with a moderate level of activity, and one that includes both a guided tour of a world-renowned site and some free time to explore on your own, then the Winchester excursion is a good alternative. Edit: Just saw Lanky Lad's reply. Winchester is indeed a good DIY alternative over the Cunard excursion if you don't mind making your own arrangements. Covepointcruiser Posted April 6, 2018 #4 Share Posted April 6, 2018 In Southampton, we enjoyed the Spitfire museum that’s not far from the port. One time we took the train to the Royal Navy Museum and had a delightful day. Both of these can easily be done on your own.
